Afrihost Uncapped 4MB - PS3 Online Gaming

Has anyone upgraded to the Afrihost uncapped account and played games like BFBC2, MAG, MW2 on the PSN? I am seriously considering the upgrade and would like to know how the games run when using it. I really want to know if it works well when hosting say for instance MW2.

I havent tested the Afrihost uncapped account as yet. I have tested the MWEB one, and for me that worked very well. I must admit it was the business offering though.

I'm also curious!

I'll be trying it with MW2 on PSN. My account starts on the 1st of April, but if I can finish my current cap, I'll ask them to switch it on pro-rated before then. :)

Thanks, please post here once you've tried it. There is probably quite a difference between the business and home accounts though.. I just received an email from Afrihost saying that they're rolling out 384 and 512 uncapped in the next week or two. I'm just worried that latency etc is going to be horrible when that happens..

Cool.

I've seen some high local latency crop up every now and again on my current Afrihost capped account (around 100ms) since the uncapped launch. I'm hoping it's unrelated to uncapped...but I am not too sure. I'll rather check it out in practice than speculate for now, though. :)

Don't forget that currently they only allow 1000 4096 accounts so that will also increase.

OK so I tried Afrihost uncapped over the weekend. I did a test on speedtest.net but for some reason it showed my location as Midrand. Up/down were normal but pings to all 3 Joburg locations were between 100 - 200ms. :( I then pinged telkomsa.net, mybroadband, mygaming and all of them were about 33ms. google.com was about 234ms.

I then played and hosted a few MW2 games and I must say the connection was really good. I had a good connection to the hosts. Well, most of the time but that's p2p games in South Africa. Very happy with it so far.

EDIT: Oh I forgot, I did a speedtest.net test last night and things looked much better. My location was in Cape Town and ping about 60ms.

Ah I might be getting the Axxess 4MB uncapped... That would be so awesome! running on a 384kbs right now :(

Some feedback from my side, in light of Afrihost's apparent new throttling policies (30GB and your are heavily shaped, 60GB and you are knocked down to 1MBPS and heavily shaped, etc).
Today when I was unable to even log into PSN, with my web browsing at full speed, it was the final straw.

I will be moving over to Mweb Uncapped. Afrihost refund request is pending.

Details from this thread on myBB.

Good hunting.

So far Mweb is looking great though. Solid speed. You can see their shaping protocols kicking in on torrents, etc through the day, but XBL and PSN remains unaffected. Which was the point of the exercise for me. :)

I'm going to second this.

I've tried the new Axxess, Afrihost and Mweb offerings. Axxess and Afrihost performed horrendously for almost anything, including browsing. Mweb however actually delivers and I haven't had any problems with them yet. Low latencies, and 400kb/s consistently.

very happy with mweb, we got moved over to the uncapped stuff on saturday. been awesome thus far

Yeah. They seem to have their network sorted out. I don't mind shaping, as it essential in protecting the network load, but if you are getting 5KBps on anything except web browing at 2am on a Monday morning, someone f*cked up your shaping profile, Afrihost.
No Steam, no PSN, no XBL. Just timeouts.

Thanks Mweb. Still waiting on the refund news from Afrihost...

It's funny how the "uncapped" solutions are actually capped in essence...just throttle you into oblivion. Suppose its a start though, 1 day real uncapped might be a reality here.

I'm happy with Afrihost. My gaming is unaffected by shaping and it's only during business hours when torrents are shaped. After hours things are back to normal. It can be better though.. I am sure they are working on it, it is a new service after all.
