Aftermarket VGA Cooler

Howdy everyone

My brother has an HD4870 and about a week ago the fan just stopped working. Tried cleaning it and kinda.. spinning it around but feels very stiff, still not working. So he's looking into getting a new air cooler. Can anyone recommend one that'll work and do a decent job, for around R200?

Doesn't have to be super awesome, just something that'll allow him to use the graphics card again.

If you are still looking for a vga cooler then yes that cooler is awesome. Although I'd stay away from ikonic IT, just my personal opinion... Here's some other coolers to look at that'll fit a 4870 from someone I order from every now and then:

Just ordered the V4000 from Prophecy, probably only gonna get it next week but anyhoo...
I definitely would've gone for the Accelero Plus but he just wants a cheap cooler that'll allow him to actually use the card again.
Bah, if he ever upgrades and gives the card to me, I'll go for the Accelero or something similar. :P
 
Just an update.

My brother got his V4000 today. I installed it (with relative ease) and it works very well. Gave Crysis 2 a run, the 4870 was under around 86% load, the max temp was 57 degrees Celsius! lol. And it's VERY quiet. Very happy with this purchase.

I'm going to do a long stress test and see how it fairs to get some more accurate temp readings.

That's awesome! I've got a deep cool cpu cooler in my pc and they work nicely. I'm glad we can say the same for the vga specs so far. Please post your finidings asap!

I have the arctic cooler accellero xtreme my HD4870x2
My temps at idle sit on 40degrees , after an hour of bad company 2 it sits on 50degrees.

If youre looking to monitor all your fans and temperatures might I suggest you also look at SpeedFan.
Its a free app that reads the sensor temps on the motherboard & hard drives aswell as fan speeds.

How did your PC behave when the Graphics fan died? Will the graphics card overheat when the fan dies if the PC was already on? I ask because thats the situation Im in. I come home one evening to discover that my PC is off. When I turn it on, the graphics card is spinning at max speed, and my PC beeps at me. The beeps mean that theres no graphics card found. In the 2-3 weeks up to that date, my GCard fan had been growling and grinding. Now I just need to know, if my gcard could have died (overheated and roasted) bcos the fan died at some point, or did my PC shutdown to save the graphics card? I really would like to get a new cooling unit, but theres little point if the card is dead.

It really depends on in what condition your pcb is... (pcb = the board that the gpu is built upon) Also your graphics card fan is a so called smart fan, as soon as your gpu becomes active it starts spinning at around 50% when it hits a 100% activity and the temperature goes above 45 degrees then your fan speeds up to 100% and stays there until you are done gaming. This depends on the manufacturer though.

What I would do is remove the card and take it to a friend, attach it to his MB and see how it reacts. Your card won't overheat when windows is running, most cpu's handle windows graphics these days. So when it's in check if the fan is running. If it's not... unplug it from thepcb and see how the card then reacts (obviously restarting while doing this) and if it still continues then I'd take it to a tech and see what they say. Otherwise buying a aftermarket cooler for a gfx card isn't that expensive so go for it!
 
Hmmm Deepcool is quite decent -- didn't know about them until I recently put together a new system -- they make quite decent coolers, chaps ! And won't cost arm+leg
