Share funny stories of how the AI in games have continueally screwed itself over and probably taken you down with them.

Well I was playing the Oblivion Lost mod for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and you can reruit any friendly NPCs to follow you around. Well I got about 15 guys and was making my way through the Dark Forrest to the CNPP, I was carefylly avoiding the anomolies as to, y'know, not get killed and was hoping the personal army would do the same. No. They charge, single file, straight into the 1st vortex and all get blown to ass before getting a single shot off at an enemy.

it's like back in the day with "why bother with a sound engine for a game". AI is mostly lacking (imho) due to either lazy programming or it would just be too harsh on the cpu to implement a proper system of AI. I'm sure there was even some whispers of an AI CPU or separate unit for just working out what the AI should be doing.

On the other hand it's not so easy to write in AI since AI would be based on ( to put it simple ) a few choices the computer choose from going by the current situation. The worst one i saw was in the C&C FPS where you kill one of the two and the other one would kept talking as if his partner was still there...

As far as good game AI goes, F.E.A.R. had by far the best I've ever seen, soldiers reacted very well to the situations. Just once I'de like to see an NPC vs NPC battle using the F.E.A.R. engine.

FEAR was not bad, but not perfect either or really good AI. I'd still say that till we have games running decent separate AI engine which will obviously increase the cpu load, development cycles and programming skill. We are still far of with having a "perfect" AI in-game that would not go single file, or just run at the nearest shot fire even if 10 in front of it was just killed...

Yeah, the only thing that made FEAR's AI so good was meticulous pre-scripting. Adaptive NPCs are still the stuff of sci-fi.
yep, i will at least give them that :D

Shut it, I don't care.
i don't either, but the spelling nazi in me does

Anywhos. Back to Topic. Another phail story is from Crimson Skies. In the 5th mission you have to line up on an attack path to try and destroy a radio tower, but my wingmen do it aswell and they kept shunting my plane into the fscking ground!
