Aion - Angels or Demons?

Voicy

Hi friends,

Based on interest in this game by some of you (and the larger SA gaming community in general), I would like to see which faction tickles your fancy and maybe determine on which side we can all play together.

Haven't heard of it yet? Ok...Let me explain from a WoW p.o.v.:

Basically there are 3 factions: The Elyos (Angels/"Alliance"), The Asmodians (Emo Demons/"Hordies") and the Balaur ("Dragonkin") NPC race. So far the SA Aion community rates the popularity as Elyos 68% - Asmodians 32%.

This is by no means an attempt to force people to choose a side, but I will find it interesting to see who prefers which side.

If you haven't heard of this game yet, I strongly suggest you read through some of the comments in http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=2240

I'll wait here...

Right, so you've skimmed through that thread and you're still a little confused...Here's a few external links to give you a little more insight into the game...

There are currently 2 editions of the game being released at the end of this month:

Aion Steelbox retail version - R350.

Aion Collector's Edition (CE) - +/-R518. (What does it include? You didn't read the thread I told you to, did you? )

Please note:

This is a Pay-to-Play (P2P) game and monthly subs will be around the 10 Euro mark, so roughly R100 p/m.

Dear mods:

Can we kindly get a poll for the following 3 options:

1) Elyos

2) Asmodians

3) This game is not for me, thanks.

Dear Voicy

Ur request has been DENIED now bugger off and do some work lmao :D :p

Just kidding lmao... thanks for the info though i'll be sure to check it out :)

/me seconds the motion to deny voicy's request. (Just don't let him know, I don't want any panty kicking).

Seriously without knowing anything about this game other then voicy's post (no i didn't read more) I think I'd vote 1 if I was not going to vote 3. I can't afford another mmo in my life now, I'm quite happy with just eve as the only game I play and even that only sparingly now.

I hear what you say - naturally I'd also prefer the "light" side, but if you look at the lore, they're not as rosey as they appear:

The Elyos occupy the lower half of Atreia, known as Elysea. After the Epic Cataclysm, they found themselves bathed in sunlight for over 750 years and, as a result, have transformed into a beautiful and radiant people. However, their splendor has also led to the Elyos becoming arrogant; they see themselves as blessed by Aion, while the Asmodians, cast into darkness by the Epic Cataclysm, are seen by the Elyos as cursed creatures.

etc.
They remind me of a certain religious race who consider themselves "the chosen race".

The Asmodians are a brave and hardy people, separated from the Elyos by the Epic Cataclysm and plunged into a world of darkness and despair. To survive such desolation is one thing, but to thrive and prosper is quite another.

The scars of their history are still exposed for all to see; as the Asmodians sank into their cold and somber world, their bodies started to change. In the darkness, their skin fell pale, and as their eyes adapted, they developed an otherworldly glow about them.

To their own, Asmodians are infinitely generous and fiercely loyal - they would sooner give their life in battle than to see that of a comrade taken from them. However, outsiders beware; Asmodians are an increasingly hostile faction and will not think twice before bringing their colossal power into play. Similar to their Elyos counterparts, Asmodian Daevas are blessed with strength and the ability to fly, though their wings have darkened following many difficult years on Asmodae.

Whereas the Asmodians on the other hand seem to have been dealt a raw deal that could've gone either way and as a result of their harsh conditions, they share a stronger fellowship.

So I'm leaning towards the funny-footed Asmodians as well at this point.

I am 100% going Asmodian. From what I saw on the SA Aion site, they are likely picking Elyos, which I have no real interest in.

Picking a good server will also be important. Nothing worse than a small server.

Ye - I'm trying to get some info on which server to choose. Mid population is fine for me.

I like the high pop ones. Sometimes the queues can suck initially, but usually it seems to balance out over time. In a PvP focused game with NO instanced PvP, I would like it to be as busy as possible - It will make for some great action in the Abyss!

As far as classes go I think I have finally settled on the Sorcerer.

That's the other thing ...

In WoW I only played 1 major char (2000hrs) which was an assassin/rogue. I enjoyed it immensely, but I also saw where it came horribly short.

The Gladiators look rather formidable, but I'm not such a huge fan of the "domkrag" plate wearing, bullies with big hammers.

In Guild wars my 2 main characters are: Ranger & Fire Elementalist ... so sorcerer won't be foreign to me. Although right now I'm considering either Assassin or Ranger.

I think Assassin would suit the storyline somewhat better.

Assassins from what I read are the BEST PvP / PvE class, as well as the MOST popular class on Asian servers; for many obvious reasons (Ganking factoring in big time). I think it will be the most played class on Western servers as well.

Gladiators are also great classes and I think it is the 2nd most played class on the Asian servers and also excels in both PvP and PvE.

Ranger have the fastest Burst damage out of any class at the moment when using certain cooldown skills. However the Sorcerer has far more consistent DPS and will outshine the Ranger fairly quickly. The Ranger is a very very capable class from what I am reading.

The only classes that seem 'gimp' at the moment are Spiritmasters and Chanters.

Spiritmasters skills and pets do not scale well, or at all, longterm with gear upgrades. They rely heavily on pets but cannot have one out when flying. Their main form of damage, DoTs, will not stack with other Spiritmasters and they will overwrite each other. They however DO have the best CC around, and excel at that, but most classes have decent CC, bar one, which brings me to the Chanter.

Chanters have crap-tastic CC. For a class that relies on melee it will hurt in a game FULL of CC. It will do very well in most groups due to an ability to heal okay-ish, as well as having some great Buffs, but if given the chance the Cleric outshines in the majority of situations (including DPS). From what I know they are Gank bait more often than not in 1v1 PvP, but like I said, they can do pretty well Buffing / Healing in a group situation.

Only thing i dont smaak about Assassins is they have limited stealth time. Rogues could be in stealth indefinitely or until they're attacked or initiated an attack.

I think it is fair enough. Makes for a more tactical approach with less 'cheap' tactics coming into it.

Personally I have never liked the idea of stealth in these games, it really does feel like a huge advantage. I think this shift to a controlled timed stealth makes things a little more fair, and require more thought.

There is a good reason why so many people pick stealth classes, and why so many people with 'diminished' capacity are drawn to them.

Been reading up about the EU ENG servers and it is looking pretty hard to find a decent one.

Most of the ENG servers are having LARGE amounts non-English speaking people joining... They also seem pretty hostile after reading those forums - as in not even willing to speak English in general channels.

So it looks like it is down to either Perento, or Gorgos servers. I am leaning more towards Gorgos since their community seems pretty good on the forums. It is the unofficial RP server, but it will not be enforced by the RP community from what I gather. Also most of the time RP-ers are mature nice people from my dealings in the past with them.

The most popular ENG servers: Castor and especially Spatalos, seem to be chock-full of morons.

Looks like the majority of SA players are going to Spatalos...
Really, after reading the kinds of posts for that server on http://www.aionsource.com/forum/spatalos-eng/, I will NOT be rolling there if I can avoid it. It really seems to be the Lowest Common Denominator server with the most idiots.

It does not really matter. I have been playing MMORPG's for quite a few years now, and not once has a largely SA guild been able to offer what I want longterm.

I'll probably join you guys on that server as well (Gorgos) ... but I'll have some other characters on some of the other servers as well ... just as variation.

I'll most likely be going Elyos (they're prettier :p) - and definitely sorcerer - based on my Guildwars experience - I just have a better feel for spell-casters. Healer type on my second char. After that ... no idea ... I'll have to see what tickles my fancy.

Yeah I think I will also go Gorgos as well.

I am no RP-er in MMOs, but I do not mind it as long as it is not enforced on me. I have played tons of Pen and Paper RPG's so it does not bother me.

As far as race... Man, I want to go Asmodian, but they really seem to be the overly popular choice. This often leads to the better and more mature majority being on the opposite side.

To be honest I'm still torn between the two. I wanted to go demon, but then saw how bland their realm is. So I might just be going angel for my Templar. I'm going to be playng on US version, so won't be seeing you guys on there.
