Alienware M17xR4 S/PDIF in and HDMI input/output

I've preordered myself a PS4, arriving on the 13th of December. I've got a small issue, I do not own a TV. Never much cared for them.

So I'll either have to use one of my many PC monitors or my Alienware M17xR4, issue with the PC monitors is that none of them have audio out so I'd need to get a S/PDIF to analogue converter - which I'm not too keen on.

Seeing as I'd rather not spend extra money I think the Alienware will be my best bet, however I've never used the HDMI in, I assume that the machine is intelligent enough to take audio from the HDMI in port and output it via the 3.5mm jacks. Could anyone confirm this?

Also, can I route video from the HDMI in to the HDMI out (Alienware)? That way I can connect up one of my larger monitors and split the audio using the Alienware as a sort of proxy.

If that won't work, is it possible to connect my PS4 to one of my monitors directly, then connect the PS4 S/PDIF out to my Alienware's S/PDIF in and use it to convert the signal to analogue out.

In theory, the HDMI in will work as long as you have the latest display drivers installed. Also make sure that you go to your sound settings and choose "Input HDMI" and "listen to this device" otherwise it wont output any audio.

Otherwise, use a PC monitor, just plag any headphones into the DS4, it works really well.

Thanks, I'd actually forgotten about outputting all audio from the DS4!

If anyone is interested I found this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-11-12-will-my-expensive-headset-work-on-ps4-xbox-one

I've been searching around, trying to find out if my logitech G930 will work and apparently it will. USB audio devices are supported from update 1.5 :)

Seems you got your answers from the replies above.
Thought I would through my experience and solution when I got the PS3 and was in the same boat as you.

The PS3 came with that funny adapter that is used for European VCR's (im not sure what they are used for), which had three RCA adapters. I plugged the preparatory adapter into the PS3 in that VCR adapter and had a speaker next to, just connect the open wires from the speaker onto the open pins on the other end till the speaker moves. Though its ten times easier if you have a mutli-meter laying around. When I eventually figured out what pin goes where I was able to convert the VCR adapter to a 3.5mm jack for my hi-fi system. I didn't get the best audio quality though as the PS3 outputted amped sound then it was getting more amp power from the sound system, thus causing distortion.
