Alienware pricing in South Africa compared to US

Its all just a name. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to spend so much on a laptop.
You can get a decent gaming laptop for around R11 000, might not run games on max settings but will be great for lanning ect.

I was looking at Alienware for next upgrade and came to much the same conclusion. The top of the line ones are also so far from Mobile you may as well just get a Desktop.

Yip I think the Alienware M18x weighs in around 6KG's that's before adding any extra's lol

By the way for that money (R30 000)
I could build a full on monster pc into a suit case lol :p

Yep and the power brick is about the size of an xbox 360 power brick. Since I want power/mobility/battery life I decided that Im going to bite the bullet and go MacBook Pro, I did look at the Dell XPS 15z but its battery life is about half that of the Macbook. Its still expensive but other that UDK not being Mac compatible (which is easily solved via boot camp or one of the other virtual applications) I haven't found anything I dont like.

Yah, if you want a good gaming laptop, check out the UK edition of PC Format! They have a nice review.

Hahaha yeh. You can buy 2 monster gaming pc's for 15k each! Waaaayyyy over priced for the hardware specs, but damn they do look cool :)

Besides the price, i think they darn ugly... and wont spend my money on them even if i could. Anyway, there is much better things i can do with R30k maybe an upgrade, really want one.

You pay for the damn Alien face on the laptop.... not for me, Alienware will have to pay me to buy one of those laptops, like joker said, for that amount of money i can build a monster pc and still go on a lovely holiday!

It is a laptop, most laptop components are much more than the desktop equivalent. Looking at each component and saying it is grossly overpriced is not correct.

7200 rpm 2.5" drives are rare and expensive. A 560 is a few thousand in the desktop variant, now scale it down to fit into a laptop/desktop replacement?

Dell make good quality stuff, you will already pay a premium just for the brilliance of their support.

I probably wouldnt pay that much for such an item, but it isnt that overpriced.

Thats a good perspective to take.

I use to love Dell, got burned with my last (current) one. Its developed a temperamental Spacebar that will stick (even though I use a wireless keyboard and mouse) at random times. :wtf:

Even when the wireless is unplugged?

If it is under warranty they will fix it. I have had a dell representitive fix a few machines that were returned to me. Next day, on location repair.

As opposed to fighting with wholesalers for weeks about whether something was bought from them or not...

Asus make a great gaming laptop for a decent price... I just hate the service we get from SA wholesalers.

Toshiba are just too damn noisy and have a bloat-load of extra-annoying software.

Yeah even with the wireless or wired one plugged in. I guess I could disable to onboard keyboard but if the shit hits the hyperdrive how do I reactivate it.... its out of warranty and Im in the wrong country. Bought it back in SA. Im due for an upgrade anyways so its no biggy. Funny thing is the first one I bought was an out of the box failure. Track pad kept causing kak that crashed the entire system. So they swapped it for a new one... which then developed this hickup. But it was a budget laptop so its my own fault. Part of the reason I am going top of the line (or as close to the top as I can get) with my next upgrade.
