Always-on internet "good for everyone" - id Software

I wonder if that means always on for Rage? Forgive any ignorance, I haven't read up much about this game, as I don't want to get too hyped coz I really do want a new Borderlands type game

I think its retarded.
Not everyone has great Internet, especially not us.
These guys seriously don't think to far...they keep digging deeper into the stupid hole for ideas.
I agree piracy is a bitch and it should be taken care of, but forcing the people that support you into playing a single player game online..that's just tardy.

As usual punishing the people who actually buy and play legit copies - I wonder when the developers are going to pull their heads out their asses.

I don't mind the way Steam does things tbh - Steam takes care of the authentication, whether you are on or offline - which means if your internet breaks, you can still play.

What the pro-always-on group seem to miss is that, despite it being 2011 (no rly?), things still go wrong, and you can still end up without internet for a couple of days on end - especially here in our own little green patch of the planet (that same green as rusty copper cables btw) - and lacking your little chance to assuage your possible YouTube addiction, gaming is going to be your next avenue of escape.

Except not ... y'know, because some ass ran off with parts of your phone-line.

There is a world outside the States ?

But he does have a point with steam, however it can go into off-line mode...

Always on internet is not the solution for everyone. A vast amount of countries have very poor internet access and will not be able to access this feature. This stops piracy. They lost legitimate customers. Previously legitimate customers then resort to buying pirated version of the game. Infinite Loop.

Correction ... it doesn't stop piracy. If anything ... it probably makes it worse.

You are right (should have read it before I posted). But yeah, that is what I was getting at with the rest of the comment. The more people that they alienate with always on internet, the more people will be forced (loosely used) to get a pirated copy of the same game. Which does not really help their argument that it is a good thing.

I'm all for always-on gaming. It's progress. Stop bitching, accept it and move on. :)

Well, it might not be a problem for you. But do you realise there are many gamers under the age of 18 that do not have access to the internet? Not to mention this country is ranked in the high 100's for its Internet rubishness...This is only a solution if you stay in places with epic net that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Also note in the interview he says. The games update automatically.."So fuck you person that spent R500 on a game, we'll just use your bandwidth as we please"

This is not the solution.

Afrihost and Cell C really started this whole affordable bandwidth in SA drive...it's awesome for everybody! The problem with game developers assuming that everybody has an always online connection is their battle with piracy - I am not always online, and it shouldn't be required that I be online in order to play my games...

And yet they bring out patches thats bigger and bigger so even though we got cheaper data packages it cost us about the same in the amount we have to buy since they forching a update on us.

Dam this always online story is so stupid, Where is the good old day where they gave you a choice.

I really don't agree with his attitude saying "tough shit, you will like it...eventually".

If I feel a game is good enough for me to pay a publisher (and there aren't many), I will buy that game. This typically involves Blizzard products. I don't mind the always on requirement for play, as I will most likely want to play online with it.

If you think game developers care about 3rd world countries, think again. They don't really care if you can't play their game, their target market is people who can afford to buy the game and comfortably support it. We are just bonus buyers. And to be honest, I don't mind not giving them my money if I don't feel it worth it :)

I don't particularly mind that inet connection is required, but my game better not be interrupted half way because my ISP sneezed.

The only justification for this is piracy...and it isn't even effective against that either.
