AMC announced today that the network is in the initial stages of developing a companion series to its original drama series "The Walking Dead," which premiered on AMC in October of 2010. "The Walking Dead" is currently the #1 show on television among adults 18-49. Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are on board as executive producers, with AMC Studios set to produce. The companion series has a target on-air date of 2015.

"Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer," said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. "We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

"After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of 'The Walking Dead' universe," said Kirkman. "The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."

Season four of "The Walking Dead" returns to AMC on October 13. "The Walking Dead" is based on the comic book series created and written by Robert Kirkman and published by Skybound, Kirkman's imprint at Image Comics.

They could probably make an infinite amount of these, but if they stick to the same old formula (the setting of a hospital/mall, having a loved one slowly turned into a zombie etc.) it would probably get boring fast.

I rate they should focus on a poorer group of people who are much more 'gangster' and are more willing to take advantage of the apocalypse... so they'd be the first to start killing, looting, raping etc. The show would be like the love child of 'The Wire' and 'The Walking Dead', it'd be awesome (at least that's what it's like in my head).

in my mind companion series equates to a story from the Zombie perspective. (ie they are not as dumb as they look but perhaps just held back by their decomposing bodies etc.) but that would be a sucky story cause i would hate to have to read convo dialog between them...

on a serious not though if they can pull it off by creating an original story with the same look and feel as the current series i would definitely watch it

 No more Walking dead or spin offs or any form of it.

The series has lost what made it great, the 1st and 2nd season were really good and then they fell off the bus.

I still enjoyed it, but I felt the second season was more of a soap opera

Maybe I've got rose tinted glasses on but I just think back to Rick vs Tomas whenever I doubt the show....

and I'm a TWD fanboy again

I don't mind a bit of soap.. if there's a good balance between zombie mashing action and soap. Drama is a fundamental aspect of this series for me otherwise I wouldn't care that much for the characters when something happens.

I still enjoy the show, but these spin-off's never work out. I'm also scared they're going to do the same for Breaking Bad.

I remember Scrubs when they made "The interns" or something as a spin off series. It just wasn't good enough and quickly died.

And stargates universe didn't work out to well. If I remember correctly.

I can't even remember the last time a zombie was even in the comics, it has evolved into a show about humans in extreme situations. . .

If the Tell Tale game is anything to go by there is plenty of potential for other stories and maybe some overlapping. I would really not be interested in seeing a Tyrese/Michonne/Hershel story before they met Rick.
