AMD Radeon RX 480 4K benchmark leaked - faster than a GeForce GTX 980

Am I missing something here? Shouldn't they compare it to the 1070?

Maybe the 1060 whenever it releases.

You are missing something.

The RX480 is a new mid range gpu offering high end performance for a lot less money.
The GTX980 launched at around $550, this card is as fast as or slightly faster and it comes in at $200-$250.

The GTX980 is a fairly strong card, easily able to max anything at 1080P and able to run most games maxed or close to maxed at 1440P.
So you'll be getting that level of performance, with much lower tdp and much better efficiency for a lot less money.

AMD aren't competing with high end Pascal, they're opening the door to high level pc gaming at a much lower entry point.

If you want competition for the 1070/1080 you'll have to wait for Vega, which will be available towards October/November this year.

Thanks, that clears it up. Would have been tempting to grab one of these if not for the somewhat affordable 1070. Might wait until I see some Vega benches. The drivers are a concern as well.

Haven't followed the news on this card. Would it be worth selling my 290 and getting one of these?

Well at least we now know there will be two new cards:
RX 480 - the $199 entry into the mid-ranged price giving us higher tier necromancer.
RX 470 - A step down from the 480 now details yet but according to AMD it's aimed at gaming at 1080p60fps.
RX 460 - Entry level or for Pro gamers(?) Probably enough power for 60fps on LoL, CSGO, DOTA 2 etc.
