AMD vs Intel

I am looking to buy a new processor, don't know whether I should go with AMD or intel
I am thinking the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (4 x 3.4Ghz), or an i5

Mostly for gaming and a little bit of photshop
What do you guys reckon?

I have an intel i5 760. It has tons of power, 11.2 GHz if you add up the cores and it can run lots of games on one core, which is 2.8 GHz. It's also very widely used, so very cheap. I got mine for R1700, very nice. If you wait until next year for new socket there won't be as much choice available to you in terms of Mobos. An i5 socket is widely used. So, I prefer an i5. They may be a bit expensive but they do have quality.

I have a Phenom X6 1055T, that's 16.8GHz if you add up the cores (6*2.8) !And it OC's so easily to 3.4 GHz that you can easily say its a 20GHz CPU! XD

Honestly dude, I dont know what you think it is that you know, but trust me, you DON'T.

Anyway IAMTHESTIG, you say you want to buy a new processor, but what do you currently have? Do you already have an AMD motherboard capable of running the 965 BE? If yes, then rather go with that for now, and then in the next 2 or 3 years get a whole new PC.

That was just unnecessary. He was looking at quad cores, I gave him a view on a quad core that I can relate to as I own one. Good for you that you have a CPU like that, not everyone can afford one.

I agree with this statement. If you do have one, do upgrade rather than have to replace your whole Mobo.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm leaning towards the AMD because of what I have read about overclocking it easily, particularly the black edition. The dude at the shop said he had the phenom x4 3.4GHz and got it running at 4GHz with only a little extra cooling

You realise you only I one choice of cipset for your current CPU?
Most manufactures have already lined up 3 mobos for the launch so there will be a decent selection with all the new features the that the new chipset will bring.

I was buying this PC on a bit of the budget, so the CPU had to be relatively cheap, and the MOBO was good for my purposes. The i5 760 gives me enough power, and I wasn't going to spend more than 2 grand on a CPU.

And imathestig (nice name BTW ^^): I would say go for the AMD, they do have some good CPUs. And the OC there sounds nice, and if you want to really spend on cooling you could possibly push it further ;)

Well, it cost R1900. Less than 2 Grand! Which works out to R316.667 per core, not bad at all. And I was being HIGHLY sarcastic when it came to the whole 6*2.8 = 16.8GHz (even the 6*3.4 =20.xxx). No one in their right mind would make that sort of calculation when comparing CPU's. I hoped that you would see that...

You havn't told us what you currently have, if it even warrants an upgrade, or are you getting a completely NEW PC?

I would go Sandy Bridge at this point. 2500K - 4.5ghz on stock cooling, that's $216. There is simply nothing else that comes close.

I'm pretty sure, but I don't think that's how a CPU works, multiplying the cores and saying it's a 16Ghz processor..

I think it just means that it can process 4 threads simultaneously at 2.8 Ghz.

Think of it this way: 4 men lifting 40kgs != 1 man lifting 160kgs.

Lol, exactly :D

It's more like 4 men lifting 40kgs = 4 men lifting 160kgs.

Except, that the above equation is not mathematically correct by conventional means :P
