ANC members should lobby for the decriminalisation of prostitution because some of the party's officials used prostitutes' services, the Sisonke Sex Workers Movement said.

"It's unfortunate that we are good enough for the ANC politicians to make use of our services, but they are afraid to come out in support of decriminalisation of sex work, and the protection of our human rights," Sisonke national lobbyist Nosipho Vidima said.

I read that article about them "using the services" offered by the ladies, and I agree, they should push to have prostitution legalized... That was they could control the industry, reduce the spread of HIV, And make a fortune in taxes...

Or instead, they could follow the laws of the country they govern? That might be an idea...

if they leagalize this it will turn into a pandemic and crime will rise more because then "pimps" will start abducting girls and woman to use and to make a profit from and it will be worse than it is now

I would vote against something like this

The thing is that people often throw around the terms "decriminalization" and "legalization" as if they are the same thing, but they're technically not. So the article's title is a bit misleading.

In my understanding, decriminalization just means that it won't be handled by the justice system anymore, and you won't be arrested, taken to court, or thrown in jail, but could still potentially be fined. Also nothing would go on your criminal record. It's reduced from a criminal offence to a civil one, but still technically illegal. So less work for the cops and less people going to jail -- as if there's any room in SA jails anyway.

Legalization would mean that it could be taxed and there would be no legal repercussions whatsoever. That would very possibly present a big problem in SA.

The reason they provide for decriminalizing it is a bit wonky, at best. You can't decriminalize something simply because the government is doing it anyway. If we had to decriminalize everything government officials took part in we would probably have to do the same for theft. ;)

That said, I've always said that prostitution should not be illegal. Sex is a private matter between two adults and it is nobody else's business. If someone wants to charge money for having sex, that should be their right. Nobody should be able to tell you why you may or may not have sex.

Yeah I agree. I think it has more to do with the fact that the prostitutes industry is rather crime riddled.

Saw a newspaper headline on the way to work: "Tswane hoes vir Zuma" :D

Naturally, my brain noticed the bolded wording first.

No ........ you guys have it ass backwards. If the industry was legal, it would be overseen like a business is. More cleanliness, less abducted woman (because they would all have to be registered with ID's), more security for them, etc etc. Plus, government gets to tax it which may lead to less taxes in other areas or more money to spend (hopefully) on more schools blah blah.

Was going to say exactly the same thing... There are already Pimps, and there are woman being abducted in SA for the sex trade...

It works in Amsterdam because its not the whole country, its just a portion of it that is highly controlled...
