Cape Town cemetery flower thief makes grave error

A Cape Town thief dug his own proverbial grave this festive season when he was caught allegedly stealing flowers from a cemetery.
He was arrested at the Plumstead cemetery on Christmas Eve and charged with theft, the City of Cape Town said in a statement on Monday.
"There have been a number of such incidents, where flowers are being stolen off the graves as soon as the mourners leave the cemetery," said mayoral committee member for community services and special projects, Belinda Walker.
The City's cemetery co-ordinator Susan Brice said the suspect had not appeared in court yet. She warned families against buying extravagant wreaths or displays, as this attracted the thieves. She said they were mostly stolen to be resold.
Walker said to add to a grieving family's trauma by stealing the flowers off their loved ones' grave was unacceptable.
She urged members of the public to help nip these disrespecful acts in the bud.
