Android Root Thread

I just used the installer on the Cyangenmod site, since the instructions for installing it on an S2 is actually wrong/out of date. The installer worked very easily. It even included the Google apps.

I tried the installer, sadly for me, the S3 mini isn't officially supported by Cyanogenmod, although I see the big S3 is. So I had to get an unofficial build and flash using the recovery method.

I must say, I'm becoming a big Android fanboy, my phone was really starting to irritate me, but I'm really enjoying it again now.

I tried the CyanogenMod installer on the site as well for my S3 (full size) and it said my device is not supported

I rooted my S3 and installed CM on it and my word..so much better. I now have a G3 and I want to root it just haven't gotten around to it just yet. Thinking of flashing it with a Lollipop ROM since I don't believe there is a CM release for the G3 at this point? Correct me if I'm wrong.

just installed the CM one click thing and i must say it was an easy process.

it gave me a scare when during the process it decided that it could not communicate with my S2 anymore but after restarting my pc and phone it all worked the 2nd time round.

Samsung Galaxy S2? That's a big upgrade, you should enjoy it.

Glad the installer works well, I'm going to try it out with my wife's S3. I just had to do things the hard way because my phone wasn't supported.

Even rooting it, I had to install a Windows app because Towelroot doesn't support it either.

I see that with the installer, you don't even need to root the phone, but I would anyway so that I can put on a custom recovery and do a backup before I start mucking with the system partition.

I must say that my battery life hasn't been great lately, but it might just be because I'm fiddling with the phone all the time now, where I wasn't before, and it wasn't quite making it through the day anymore before I flashed it anyway, so I think my battery might be getting a bit old.

I am trying to keep it charged up as much as possible so I don't get stuck with no phone when there's load shedding, so I haven't seen yet how it does over the course of the day.

What I have discovered, which is awesome, is the profiles feature, which lets you turn things like wifi, bluetooth, gps, portable wifi, etc on and off (and change the different volumes, etc, etc). What's really awesome is that it has triggers, so I've now set it up so if it connects to any of my wifi networks, it switches to my work or home profile (which turns bluetooth off), and when I disconnect from the wifi (by eg moving out of range on my way to the car), it switches to my default profile (wifi and bluetooth on), then when I start up my car, the bluetooth connects, which switches the phone to the car profile (and turns off wifi). And it all happens automagically.

I also found Google Keep, which I'm now using rather than re-installing Evernote, and I've been playing with the "OK Google" feature (from the home screen, say "OK Google", and then ask it something, and it'll do a Google Search, sometimes even reads an answer back to you (eg, say "OK Google, what is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?"), and it actually works really well. I don't normally like speech recognition software because it doesn't work well without an American accent, but I have mine set to UK English, and it's picking what I say up very impressively.

That's very cool. thanks for sharing Matt.
The profiles seem to be a nice feature.

So the gpsd wakelock that's been keeping my phone draining for months has disappeared. I rebooted my phone (which I've done before) and it has been gone for a week. Nothing else has changed. I'm very happy about this.

So I have an issue with my phone these days that if I lose signal, it just doesn't come back until I reboot the phone, in the meantime it drains my battery super fast.

I have an idea that I should be updating my baseband and that I should do some extra backups, but this seems to be dangerous territory.

Anyone have any advice?

cell c has less signal towers in major areas. i myself have this problem as i am with virgin (who uses cell c). when i change location, like leaving home to go to work, i get kicked off the network. happens everywhere i go and only a reboot helps.

nothing to be done about it until my contract runs out - then i can move to vodacom.

Ya but when you come into range of another tower, the phone should pick it up again and reconnect....

This rebooting thing annoys the crap out of me though

Decided to install android 5.1.1 lollipop on my dads galaxy SII I9100, used the cyanogenmod 12.1 rom, the phone is now operating faster than my mom's S4 and everything seems to work perfectly no issues, and thats not even the final stable build of the rom.

its a shame android is so fragmented my mom's S4 has not even received the lollipop update yet and google has already announced and started rolling out android M beta's.

I was able to update my S4 to 5.0.1 using I think the "official" russian version and Odin. Did this before handing it over to my gf, and had to unroot it hehe. It didn't even have any language issues or dodgy russian-labelled bloatware, quite happy.

Now I has me a SOny Xperia z3 compact, and debating whether I should root it so soon... Also never rooted a Sony before, only samsungs.

Just in case someone was looking into reverting back to the stock ROM here is a link i found, i've not tried it yet but the mixed reviews in the comments seems to be mostly positive.
