I just don't like getting involved in the discussions anymore.
I've come across a few decent dubs - Cowboy Bebop was okay, Kiddy Grade was bearable, Evangelion wasn't bad at all - and the Full Metal Panic! set my teeth on edge, Negima! made me want to strangle Negi, Kanon made me burst out in tears. Not because of the storyline.
One of the best places to judge voice actor quality? Any really really emotional scene (a loved one dies or something). Does the character crying out raise a lump in your throat, or does it simply sound like he/she is trying to appropriately raise their voices? Usually its the latter.
As Kage also said - characterisation. This is key. FMP again - Sagara sounded like a playboy in English, rather than the completely confused by the situation yet hard-bitten soldier he was supposed to be. Tessa's voice in English made my ears burn - they made her sound like a pre-teen schoolgirl who discovered pop-tarts for the first time.
Pronunciation of Japanese names and words in English is another major gripe - and then of course there's the loss of context with regards to Japanese humour - some of those scenes just won't translate well at all - a particular example I can quote relates to Yuuichi persuading Ayu to say "Ore" and "watashi" rather than her usual "boku."
Translated into English they all 3 mean exactly the same thing - whereas in Japanese the use varies based on situation/gender. So - context is lost - and I have no idea how the gag was supposed to translate into English. I suppose they substituted it for something else - I never watched the English version.
I'm a purist - always will be.
+1 Agreed on the purist part too. Dub's just don't carry the same emotions over subs. Although I'd like to learn Japanese (read/write/speak) in totality.
I have watched a few dubs as well and generally only get a few episodes into the series and then either delete it, or go on the hunt for a Dual Audio.
@ OP, what genre's do you like, I know you mentioned spy/army etc, but specifically what are you looking at? Mature in depth anime, light hearted, adult, violent, childish, shonen based etc?
Also do you prefer short animes (12 eps) medium length(24 eps) or omfgthat'stoolong anime's (300+ eps).
Many recommendations come to mind, but I need to know where your interests are.
