Another project for home security....

So living in the West Rand seems to be more dangerous by the day these days. Our complex, where we were unfortunate enough to buy, has had a very high burglary/crime rate in the past year. That prompted me to do all sorts of things like installing my own electric fence, burglar bars on all the windows and doors, 2 security systems and a complete CCTV system around the house.

Now I'm taking it a step further. I'm going to install an IP CCTV camera and then point the sucker to my LCD screen monitoring my actual CCTV cameras at home. This means I can log into the camera remotely from any browser anywhere in the world and I'll be able to see what's going on at my home on the CCTV screen :)

You gotta love technology.

No 3 inch titanium carbide doors? No samurai guards? No IR sensitve sentry guns? No nuclear self destruct contingency? No horny doberman? Your security fails.

Funny enough I have been seeing a WUG kind of setup going on in my area with CCTV cameras all over the place as im driving... I was considering of scaling one of the Satellite Dishes lmao :p

LOL - Well like they always say: "Make your house more of an effort to break-in than the guy next door and they SHOULD leave your house alone".

That's what I'm doing. Plus it's awesome being able to check up on my house from anywhere in the country....even from my cellphone man! :)

I can tell you now this is not true...

Our gates where open we got low walls and they kept breaking into the house next to us with 2 walls and spikes, bard wire and alarm and 3 dogs.

They hit the houses that look like they have something worth stealing in it.(More security might make them think you have lots of money)

Thats actually very true. Its fine having the latest security system, but just make sure that it is kinda hidden. So in other words, burgler bars and all. but making it look like fort Knox attracts the unwanted attention, sadly.

I think the best way to prevent a robbery is to have communication with your neighbours. And to make sure you are not careless when making sure your home is locked up properly when you are not there or when you asleep.

We've been building a 2nd story over out house, and that didn't attract any attention to us, all the houses around still kept getting hit. In the past 20 years there has only ever been one breaking while the house right across the street has had 5 last year alone and another one last month. It's because they have there own business and they keep the cash at there house.

So best policy, move in close to richer people. Peferably indians who own a business.

Well so far everything I've done is to simply comply with my insurance company's policies. I've done a few bits here and there extra but nothing that would be struck as odd to the untrained eye. The problem is, MOST if not all insurance companies will have a real problem in approving a claim if you're house is broken into but you didn't take any steps to prevent it. Full burglar proofing and an alarm system is standard these days and required by most insurers.

Put up a sign thats says "No Tresspassing! Violators will be violated!" And feed your guard dog viagra in the mournings.

**UPDATE**

So I've installed the IP camera and eventually figured out the port forwarding and other technical stuff that had to be done and I can report back that it works like a charm!

I can now view my CCTV cameras at home from any browser in the World :)

This is going to come in very handy when we go on holiday and we just need to check if everything is "okay".
