Antec 920

Grimspoon

The Hoff
Looking at getting this cooler. The Joker has recommended it which is good enough for me to know it is solid. :)

Just curious if anyone else has one and what they think of it?

I couldn't work out from the pics how the block and fan actually integrate into the case.

I looks like I would need to remove my rear fan to install it.

If only I could get to my supplier today I would get it. Poo!

I've been eyeing the Antec 920 out for a while now, nearly bought one too. But then I saw this:

Corsair H100, now that will work sooooooo well with my Cosmos S Chassis. :)

H100 is a good R300-R400 more expensive and only slightly better, not to mention the rad is huge which means its only really suitable for full tower chassis. I've got a Antec Khuler 620 and a 920 and they are solid. No complaints whatsoever.

As for temps, the 920 is slightly better than the 620, although at 4.5ghz there isn't really much difference, all this depends on you're ambient room temp...Remember that xD

And yeah would have to remove you're rear fan grim. Then get a fan to go onto the rad, push pull would be fantastic.

Thanks Joker. The 920 comes with 2 fans I think?

Yeah it does. The stock fans are good, but I reckon if you can get some higher pressure fans it'll be even better.

Cool.

BTW after putting my CPU back to clock my idle temps are 31 - 37 and under load about 40 - 50.

Not bad, but think I can get it cooler.

Yeah it'll be much cooler under that Water cooler, Around 22c up to about 35-40, all depending on ambient room temp.
Also make sure you're pc is a good 20cm away from a wall, so there is proper circulation and the air can travel freely, sounds daft I know but all the small things make for perfect airflow and ultimately better temps.

Yeah that is a good point. Mine is under my desk and the left and back are pretty close to the desk. Might help moving it.

Hmmm, good points. Mounting the H100 won't be a problem since my Cosmos S can mount a 3x 120mm Rad at the top of the case. But I'll have to check the performance figures on them all again. If the H100 is only a couple of degrees cooler than the 920 than the extra cash spent on it won't be very efficient.

I'm only planning on buying next year tho so I've still got time. That's if I don't manage to find a cheap SwifTech Apogee HD waterblock while I'm in Canada.

Thanks for the info Joker. :)

always welcome mate and Hi, Haven't had a chat with you in ages xD

Update!

Just an update.

I got the Antec 920. Here are my thoughts.

Installation:

Installation was not exactly difficult but the installation guide was a little bit vague. Regardless I got it installed and it actually all fits together very nicely.

Quality:

The quality is great, the entire unit is made from high quality materials. The pipes are solid but easy to bend when installing.

Performance:

At first I was not happy with the performance, I didn't notice any difference in my temps until I changed the fans around. You have to make sure that the fans are in a push pull configuration. One needs to blow into the radiator and the other suck the air out. What I also did was replace the standard thermal paste with some coolermaster paste I have. After doing this my idle temps have dropped to around 30 - 35 and I have OC my 2500K to 4.3Ghz.

The biggest difference I noticed was under load. Playing BF3 using my old cooler I was getting insane temps into the 80's. That was OC though. Now I am getting around 48 - 54 max after OC. Really impressed.

Cost:

Not the cheapest cooler in town, but you must remember that it is a water cooler so naturally will cost more. You can pick one of them up for +- R850 - R900. Not bad at all IMO.

Software:

The 920 comes with its own Chill software which allows you to customize the fan speeds as well as the RGB light on the cooler itself which is a nice little addition.

Summary:

The Antec 920 is a solid well built little water cooling unit. Comes complete with 2 fans and the chill software. Ultimately you are looking to cool your CPU especially if you are Over clocking and the 920 does that pretty damn well. It dropped my temps by almost half which is pretty impressive!!

Pros:

Cools really well especially if you want to OC your rig.
Looks great and is really well made.
Comes with the software suite which allows you to control the fans and RGB light

Cons:

Fan noise at high RPM is insanely loud. You don't want the fans on extreme else you may very well go def.
pricey compared to air coolers.
