In Afrikaans there is a saying: "moenie die dam onder die eend se gat uit ruk nie". It means that you should overreact to some situation. This YouTube drama is the latest way in which the internet is overreacting. And here is why I say this:
This is not a new YouTube policy or and YouTube policy change. The only change that YouTube implemented was a way to more effectively communicate non-monetized videos on any channels. They created a system where each video would be flagged if it was demonetized in the past, and give the creators an easier way of appealing this. So, now everyone suddenly sees how many videos has been flagged, and they are up in arms because YouTube started taking away their monetization, where in actual fact the monetization has always been removed, they are just now made aware of it.
Then, if you go and look closely to most of the channels complaining, you'll see that it is in fact only a small percentage of their videos that's been demonetized. It's not all of them, and its not a total crackdown on all their videos. They are still making money off of more than 90% of their videos.
Then, YouTube videos makes money from adverts. It is the right of the corporation to be able to choose which types of videos they want to be associated with. No marketing department for any big company would want their adverts running in front of videos dealing with racism, war, rape or any other of that type of stuff. They don't want their adverts to be associated with that type of talk, and its their absolute right to do so. And seeing as this has been within the YouTube terms of services for years, any content creator should know this, and they should realize that making more edgier content will limit your ability to monetize. Its bloody obvious!!! So content creators should play the role of innocent lamb of not knowing anything.
But yes, this does have an impact on people making videos talking about certain topics that is really important to have, and I agree, those videos should still be on YouTube. And you know what, nobody is stopping them from doing that. Nobody is stopping anyone to make content talking about more controversial topic. Anyone can still upload those videos. Just do you honestly expect any advertisers to actually advert in front of your suicide rape talk video? Hell no!! No one in their right mind would want their adverts in front of those videos. But you can still upload them
Also, why don't these YouTubers try and get sponsorship deals for their channels, and in doing that they can upload any video they want, without fear of demonetization. There are plenty of channels operating as such.
Remember YouTube Red, and the controversial uproar that started all over the internet? You remember how everyone was saying YouTube is dying and this and that. More than a year later, and nothing changed. The same will happen here. Nothing will change. Its the bloody internet as usual just going overboard over something they don't know all the fact about and will be dead within a month.
