Hi guys,
I'm looking for a RTS for my dad, he used to play command and conquer red alert back in the day but on skirmish mode where you built up your base, built lots of units and blew the 3 or 4 AI teams up. Do you guys have any recommendations on newer games that could incorporate something like this. He likes tanks and stuff though so nothing to futuristic with robots and such and nothing from the age of Lord of the Rings either.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks.

My pops LOVES the Age of empires series, he plays it hour after hour lol. Starcraft 2 also has a good Verse AI feature with Terran offering the tanks and marines etc hope this helps.

I'll show them to him thanks, know of any more world war type games? I know he didn't like Command and Conquer Tiberium Sun because of not "tanky" enough with to many robots etc.

Company of heroes- that's full on ww2, and very realistic.
Not exactly an RTS, but has he tried commandos?

Edit* of course there's always red alert 3. Its a little more futuristic, but a lot of fun on skwermish.

Company of heroes is by far the best.
Company of heroes 2 is on its way this year.
Why not let him check out X-com Enemy Unknown Demo as well.

Pity he doesn't do old school, Rome total war is my best recommendation

+1 to company of heroes

War Commander by Kixeye. It's a free to play (sort of) Facebook game. Has a couple of million players. Been playing to for about 8 months now, and cant stop.

Has he ever played Red Alert 2 and 3? If he enjoyed the first one then he will love the sequels! Otherwise I would also say Company of Heroes. Whatever you do just don't get Command & Conquer 4 since there's no base building which is pretty stupid.

C&C 4 sucks ass...... And I brought it!

RA3 was also not my fav, but 1&2 was epic.

SC2 is pretty good and the new expansion HOS-(heart of the swarm) is almost out

C&C Generals? Has he tried that?

Act of War is a solid RTS that flew under most people's radars. A strategy game set in modern times and it has live action cinematics just like the C&C games. Came out in 2005. I really like how they did airstrikes in this game. You build bases & units normally except for your bombers & fighters that come from off the map. You still build them like other units, but they come from an aircraft carrier or airbase nearby and take a few seconds to reach their intended destination once called in.

Tom Clancy's Endwar is ok, but you don't build bases or units. You play with squads that you choose at the start of a mission.

World is Conflict is very realistic, but you don't build bases. You call in reinforcements that get airdropped onto the battlefield

My recommendation as well its suppose to be just one month away but now with sega at the reins who knows

I know you said he doesn't like Lord of the rings type games- so not sure if you mean medieval or fantasy, but the total war series is good also from a pure strategy point of view. You command hundreds of soldiers (From swords to muskets) but can pause the battle to set up lines and give orders. The system works well.

hows the single player on this- any of those irritating non base building missions where you only get 10 troepe and you have to clear the stage out. Stopped playing Universe at war for this very reason.

Now you're testing my memory. I think there may have been one or two. Very much like the C&C games did them, though. So short and bearable, mostly.

RA3 was also not my fav

I enjoyed the skirmish mode a lot, but the single player campaign was atrocious. You had to jump through hoops before you could set up a base- like destroy xyz with a sub. Then to make matters worse, they gave you allies who attack right off the bat, so by the time you finally have your base set up, most of the enemy are already wiped out. You just have to drive in 2 tanks and take out whatever is left- a power plant and 3 troops.

I must look out for it on steam- watched a review and it looks decent enough.

Oh, almost forgot! Empire Earth :P It's old, but damn good. And if you only like a modern setting then you can limit your games to stick to those epochs.

Try Soldiers heroes of ww2 out. Its an awesome rts and quite unique because of the optional direct control method. No base building though. You also get 2 campaigns from the allied and German perspectives. I also liked the fact that you could scavenge weapons and ammo from dead soldiers which reminded me of Xcom.
