Anyone know a good TV repair place?

matt

Local caffeine junky
So my TV has broken down, it shows a picture for a second and then goes blank. As I understand things, this is likely something to do with the backlight, and should be a fairly easy fix.

There is a Samsung service center near my place, but I've taken a monitor there for a similar issue, and they quoted more than a new monitor would cost and wanted to replace the whole panel, but people say it should just be a capacitor, so I am looking for somewhere to fix it properly, without costing as much as a new TV.

Anyone know anywhere good in Jhb? Preferably Randburg side of town

Just claim from insurance and get a clever TV

Well, if you can prove one way or another that it's due to load shedding or recent thunder storms then you're in with a shot.

Hmmm, I think recent storms might have contributed to it, and there have been weird power fluctuations lately, but I don't know if I can really prove anything like that. And I'm already in the middle of a claim for the car for hail damage. Don't know if I can push my luck with insurance.

Well, I've sent an email to my insurance broker to find out if I can claim for it just in case, it is pretty likely that the storm caused power surges which damaged the TV

Yeah, what they'll do is send it to a designated repair place and determine if power fluctuations could have caused it. If the guy says yes you'll get a new TV.

Ya I just spoke to my broker, I have to get a letter saying that it is lightning damage, and either the cost of repair, or a letter saying that it is irreparable or uneconomical to repair, and a quote for replacement, then I can claim, and the excess is R250. I'll take it to Samsung and see what they say. I know the Samsung place will charge me R200 to quote if I don't take them up on it, but I guess they are the best place to take it to, to be all official and everything.

Thats ridiculous... Iv had a power surge in my place that took out a few things, including my Samsung TV, And insurance sent a guy out to inspect my place and the damaged goods... They shouldnt be telling you to go get it checked out... Thats what you have insurance for... What company are you with if u dont mind me asking?

M&F, I've asked my broker to check with them if they can send someone, maybe she was just being lazy. They can apparently send someone round to fix my windscreen at least, so don't see why they can't send an assessor.

My thoughts exactly... Thats why i was so shocked she was like you need to go get it checked... thats BS...

Cool, they are getting someone to give me a call to arrange a quote. Thanks for the tip

So as it turns out, the guy was just someone the broker was sending around because one TV is apparently too small a claim for the insurance company themselves to send an assessor for, unfortunately that guy keeps not pitching up, so I sommer took it to Samsung, who have quoted about R4850, and for that price, I might as well buy a new TV. Unfortunately, they didn't send the damage report that I need for a claim, so I am now waiting for that and hoping that they do say it's lightning damage and not just old age.

Yeah, hoping for your part that they say it's power source (Eskom/Lightning) related and that your insurance says it's "uneconomical to repair" so you can get an awesome new TV

Hopefully, otherwise I'll try find someone who does circuit level repairs, which should be much cheaper. I think that Samsung sommer replaces the whole panel rather than trying to repair the broken one. And it could potentially be something as simple as a blown capacitor.
