Today Apple revealed the next version of its OS X operating system at its WWDC keynote. Heading to iMacs, Macbooks, and the Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan.
El Capitan is available to developers today. A public beta begins in July, and it will roll out free for everyone this fall.
Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi took to the WWDC stage to say the focus was on "experience and performance." Check out the detailed new feature set below.
Federighi talked experience first.
In El Capitan, shaking your cursor will enlarge it. In Safari, you'll be able to pin sites to your browser using a two finger swipe, allowing them to open instantly when you boot up the browser. Browser audio can also be muted and discovered more easily.
Spotlight search has been improved to allow you to find what you're looking for contextually. Federighi used the example, "Mail I ignored from Phil" as an example to show exactly that in the Finder. You can search by date and subject as well.
Misson Control has been made "smoother, simpler, faster," as has Mail, which features tabs, minimized windows, and drag-and-drop between messages in El Capitan. Windows can be snapped to half the screen for split view by holding the green button. From there, you can also resize your windows.
Federighi also detailed the performance enhancements in El Capitan.
