Apple Set to Release New Console, Will Rely Solely On Third Parties For Software Says Pachter
There’s been a lot of speculation concerning Apple and what some believe will be it’s inevitable entrance into the gaming industry. But still many analysts have doubts, arguing that the company already has three gaming devices: the iPhone, iPod Touch and now the iPad.

But there’s one analyst who believes that Steve Jobs and the gang will make a full play, introducing a standalone console, adding one more machine to compete with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo’s systems.

“I think Apple’s going to be a serious gaming company,” the Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst, Michael Pachter said on the latest episode of his show. “The difference between Apple and Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft is, Apple is not known for internal software development. So I don’t think you’re going to get an Apple Games Group like you have Microsoft Games Studios making games – you’re certainly never going to approach the quality of games you get out of Nintendo.”

He added: “So Apple’s going to be solely dependent on third parties to support their console in the future.”

Apple will introduce a console because according to Pachter, the success of the iPod touch has basically proven to them that in the gaming industry, software sells hardware, and so they’ll continue to promote and encourage software development to sell hardware, which, according to Pachter is what they care about.

Good god. Will they be able to play it at coffee shops while blogging and listening to their music on an iPod, while making calls with an iPhone and staring hungrily at the iPad? Or will there be too much arrogance for them to do that?

And the email client on the console will be AWESOME, it'll open emails and will be the BEST user experience to read emails. FANTASTIC choosing an email on the console and it'll be AMAZING when it shows you email. NO OTHER offers such an AWESOME experience. Oh, and it plays games too.

Aaaaand that's about exactly where this whole concept breaks down and fails epicly. No third parties will embrace your console until you've got some first-party exclusives to shore up the base. The PS3 came pretty dang close to being doorstopped for this exact same reason.

Lol, Apple. I think you'll find that gamers are a slightly different breed to your current userbase of snooty cyborg trendoids.

and it just might shock us by hitting up something.

oh how i dread that day...

Well if Apple can pull this off, which I am certain they could, it will be a great contender.

One thing is for sure, Apple never do anything half-assed :D

I'm not to fond of the idea that Steve Jobs will be able to dictate what games and I can and cannot play. The iPhone is a great device, honestly it is. But it's taught me a few things about how Apple operates in terms of how limiting they can be towards what you're allowed to do. I don't want to see that in my gaming life.

The thing is, it's not really about the hardware at all. The Wii's hardware is pretty pathetic, but because of Nintendo's in house support and development, it's the most successful console in the world. Both the Xbox and PS3 are hot on it's heels, and both also sport fantastic in-house services, titles, etc. As aesthetically sexy, usable and powerful as Apple makes this thing it's not going to matter if they're relying entirely on third parties to prop up the platform for them. The only way I can forsee this being a success is if, like loading MS Office on a Macbook, this thing runs 360 games out of the box or something. Which is pretty unlikely, considering.

Do we REALLY need like 10 more consoles taking up shelf space?

Its like my worst nightmare coming true, all the games split between a multitude of different consoles and to be able to play all the decent ones, your going to need to own them all. *Dreams of a day when there is a unified gaming platform....*

Lekker, hopefully they make it just as user friendly and functional as all their other products. I still think the Iphone is incredible.

And than you touch your brand new apple console, and than the casing crumbles likes it was glued together with air. just the Iphone
