Appropriate for Children

Hey guys

Me and a friend do a weekly tech/gaming It related show on a local community station, a question was raised from a listener who wants to know what games they could get for their 15 year old.

Me and my fiend are both single and without children so, it thought why not throw the question out here, what games have any of you who have children allowed or would consider getting for your kids in the 15 year age group.

If any of you who don't have kids have any good suggestions post as well.

Specifically for PC or just games in general (Consoles too)?

Most Disney and Pixar movie based games are great for younger age groups. Sport games are usually a winner as well as racing games.

I think at that age it really becomes difficult, as I can bet you a lot of his (assume he's a boy) are playing pretty much all games available up to an 18 age restriction. I would think that 'adult' content games such as The Witcher 1/2 would not be appropriate for obvious reasons, while something like Darksiders 1/2 may be ok.

As a parent I believe that you should make the best, informed decision out there I.e. do a little research yourselves as well.

As suggested sports games are the safest bet.

Depends how he was raised,i watched horror movies from the age of 10 and i was more fascinated with the monsters then being scared.Even today horror and sky-fi is my favorite genre.

I played any and all games as long as they don't contain sexual content.Never understood why sex has to be in some games,no entertainment value.

Playing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and I feel that it's an appropriate game for age 12+.
It's a fairytale-like RPG with fairytale-like violence.

Gameplay is fun.
Story is entertaining.
Soundtrack is very calm and soothing, even in combat. It's entertaining to listen to.

In my opinion FPS are a big No-No till your 17.
I would stick to Racing games, Sports and strategy. I would encourage Strategy games to help develop Logic and planning, these are skills that can prove very handy in Highschool etc.

Rome total war is great, just set the settlements to auto-managed. Otherwise look at starcraft, Age of Empires, company of heroes.

As for racing its my usual line up Grid 1 or 2, NFS the Run, underground, Hot pursuit, Shift 2 and also Mx vs Atv.

Lastly I would say Batman since he doesn't ever kill anyone. I also love AC but turn off the gore (pushing my age restriction believe here) and hope the story teaches him something.

If there has to be violence then keep it to 3rd person view, I just believe children need to separate themselves from the character, can't do that in an FPS.

Edit:
I forgot the best children's game ever, Pokemon. If you get Black or White 2 then you can also tag along at a weekly league and play with other pokemon trainers, I'm playing with the Pretoria pokemon league in Garsfontein on fridays.

If not there is skylanders

Im with you on the strat games, most of the time there is no over the top violence and no sexual content.

I think games like Torchlight 2 and a lot of the steam indie games are good for kids as well

When in doubt, there are age restrictions on games for a reason. You can't buy a game that says on the box that it's not suitable for kids under 18, and lists the reasons like violence, sex, language, etc, and then complain that it's not appropriate for your 15 year old. The box already tells you that.

Otherwise, I suppose you have to make the call as a parent what you think your kids can handle in the same way as you'd decide what movies are appropriate.

But ya, better to let them (younger kids especially) start with strategy/puzzle/platformer games that can actually help them develop some cognitive skills.

I just want to add this, 18+ games have those labels for a reason, parents shouldn't be buying those games for kids because they can or because they want to be the cool parents. To me its like parents buying Porn, vodka and cigarettes for their kids. By all means if you feel your child is old enough to handle/try it then go for it, same story with games. The difference is when Billy gets his first Beer its with his parents under their supervision, same should work for CoD or whatever FPS you get.

Maybe I should have added this earlier but you could end your show explaining that you can get your kids a game outside their age limit, just like you would a beer for your child. The main point though is that if you do make sure you supervise the transition and keep things in check, we have restrictions for a reason.

Well tbh giving 15 year old's popcap games aren't going to entertain them at all. Strategy games are awesome! And well if I had children I'd let him play 16 rated games. Can't go wrong with moba games.

Also it doesn't hurt to check some gameplay beforehand.
