Are computer peripherals underrated?

Hi guys.

I set up a poll to see what you guys think. Do we underestimate the importance of peripherals like the Keyboard, mouse, Monitor, speakers etc. I know I certainly do.

I came up with this topic after I typed on a mechanical keyboard for the first time the other day. It felt so much better than a membrane keyboard. And if you think of it, we spend so much time using our keyboard/ mouse/monitor that I would venture and say it offers more to our overall experience than that fancy overclockable motherboard with great VRM's, and that fancy overclockable processor.

Another thing I find a bit strange is the amount of people putting (for e.g) sli 780s in a 1080p monitor, which is total overkill imo. I would venture and say the game would look much better with sli 770s (maybe even 760s) and a 1440p monitor.

So what do you guys think? Do we skimp a bit too much when it comes to peripherals?

i guess it depends. i don't see the point of spending 1 grand on a mouse or 2 grand on a keyboard. i'm not saying buy a fong-kong cheapie, but you can get by just fine with something decent. but with regarsd to a MONITOR, i say you should splash out. i went big with my DELL IPS 16:10 and not a single regret :D
 
Well I for one like to play PC games with a wireless controller, yes I know 1st person shooters is a schlep to play with controller... so don't really see the need splashing out on a fancy keyboard and mouse.

Thats why I have a cheapie Genius wireless keyboard and mouse combo (R199):p

I was a console guy all my life untill I moved over to the dark side of PC gaming and paying almost triple, if not more, than a console's price for CUD goodies like a great cpu, gpu, psu, ram and ssd. That said, it will take me a very long to get to playing with a keyboard and mouse lol!

So for now I'll skimp on good/pricey peripherals lol!
 
I have spent a lot of money on my mice and keyboards over the years. Recently bought a mech keyboard and a second G500 as well as a SteelSeries Sensei MLG mouse. The difference a mouse design can make on your playing is huge. The same with a keyboard.
 
Meh I'm still light on my mouse and keyboard, I'm mostly using a controller these days so I'm happy there. Otherwise I have decent monitor and headset.

Oh yes that reminds me - I've spent a lot on audio as well. Skimped out on the screen when I first put together my system as I wasn't aware of various refresh rates/lightboost etc.

Currently considering either 1440p or a G-Sync monitor.
 
Iv'e spent over a grand for a mouse (Mamba) close to R2000 for a Keyboard (Mechanical) and R6000 for a screen. In all honesty, it was a tremendous waste of cash. The screen, yeah, 120Hz is unbeatable, but at that cost? KB, Mouse combo can be had for a grand or so back then and you would have quality. Just don't spend cash on unknown brands and you will be fine.
 
I focus way more on the performance and everything on my laptop and screen than anything else, if I win some nice peripherals then I will gladly use them.

I think one should always buy the quality items (cheaper ain't better and all of that...I'd type the Afrikaans one out by my spelling in Afrikaans is atrocious lol). Sometimes the more expensive items are a bit too expensive but in general a nice mouse, keyboard, set of speakers, headphones, monitor, etc. just makes up for the price difference.

Well, yes.

But I do spend a disproportionately large amount on peripherals - mostly cause I can use them for several years, without replacement.

Goedkoop koop is duur koop. :P

In my opinion it's definitely better to spend a bit more for quality peripherals, but I won't go overboard with it.
 
My wife always complains about me spending R880 on a mouse or R1400 on a keyboard but then she hears that some of my friends buys a 299 KB every second year and then she realizes that i might spend a lot now but i'm not spending it every year and then she sees i'm saving so it's worth it to spend a bit more on something that you know will last you a life time

The golden rule of being a PC gamer - never tell the wife how much you really spent on the PC and its components. Also don't let her see your Steam collection and Heaven forbid she puts your SteamID into one of those websites that calculate the value of all those games.
 
Hmmm...My keyboard was about R800 and my mouse was R600...I wouldn't say it's excessive though. They keyboard I really wanted something that was quiet and comfortable as I was spending so much time in front of the pc doing assignments and research papers. Biggest waste I've done though was buying a Razer mouse, cost me like R700 and broke after a few months...I've ranted many times about that thing on the forums -.-

Hahahahaha i wish i could see she was a person al banker at one time and shes' a conveyancing lawyer now so i'm kinda screwed
