Are we becoming lazy gamers?

What does that make me?

I tend to post a lot of the info the lazy guys use to get around :p (Like my Aion guide earlier this year - and I'm planning to do something similar for GW2).

On the other hand, I'll also go visit forums and sites if I'm looking to perfect something I'm doing on one of my own characters - no matter how much you think you know about your game, there's always someone else who may have a slightly better way of doing something.

I actually like being challenged in games. I miss the days of having no internet and having to figure out just what lever to pull or press in the days when Tomb Raider was daunting.

These days I do use game guides but only when I'm really, really stuck. Admittedly though, now that I have easy access to the internet I tend to use them before I start pulling my hair out from frustration unlike before when I would develop bald patches. I also tend to use game guides when I've finished a game or am near to finishing a game, particularly with RPGs, just to make sure I have not missed out on much.

same, i tend to tough it out til i do it myself.

then i tend to get bugged by friends and family who play the game after me...

For some reason I knew u guys were going to use that photo as soon as I read the title, lol I have no comment about the article though :)

I like a challenge I have never gone online to find a guide to a mission or challenge I am struggling with so much more rewarding to figure it out your self.

Yes and no. I hardly see why I have to spend days/weeks getting annoyed at a particularly difficult part of a game, when I can pull up a guide and see what to do. And this I only do when I am well and truly defeated. One thing I don't do is the walkthrough method, starting at point 1 and working my way through to the end, step by step. That defeats the object and makes the game totally pointless.
Besides I've been there, I used to sit with Kings/Hero/Police/Space Quest, with no option but to slog it out, compare notes with friends who were as stuck as me, until we finally came up with a solution.

I don't use guides. I am a old breed gamer who never asked or needed help from anyone when it comes to games.

I usually only go through guides and walkthroughs after finishing the game by myself, during my 2nd go to find any secrets and hidden contents.

Older Tomb Raider games are an exception. That shit is hard!

I finished the older ones with our any guides took me months but I still did it:)

I tend to get help online only when I am really stuck, as in for a week I havent managed to get past a point and I am a threat to my pc :P

For games like wow, my first 3 years was without any addons and even now I have basic ones in place that just helps with storage and ui changes. And for alts I will use Carbonite to help with speed leveling. But I recently completed the Loremaster achievement in the game and in the end the last about 20 quests I was stuck cos I couldnt find the chains that I have missed. So for that I used wowhead to help me out, but I took my time as well and read and explored all the details of the game again with out any addons or wowhead for help with quests.

I remember the days of phoning friends trying to figure out what to do next in games like Kings Quest and so forth, I actually replayed them last dec without walkthroughs and it was so much fun :D

After my dabble in WOW I really really became a mess looking for the easy answers for the most simple puzzles. Thank goodness don't play it anymore and I am day by day feeling better to take on challenges again without any help.

Only after my 6th or so play trough of fallout 3 did I search for some help involving the bobble-heads.
Never read anything on how to build my character since I build it like I want to. Not because they tested it and its the BEST fk your best I just want to have fun.

I feel much of it is the developer's fault...

ok sure, I know they *cannot* stop people running to guides and online help, but my point it this:
Replay through some of the olsdschool games (space quest, police quest, etc) and just experience the glory of the old days.
those games were hard, and yes, we didnt have internet to help, so we had to tough it out. but you were meant to think.
It was awesome.
Though, it feels as if most games are now developed with the mind of spoonfeeding the player - or the type of games is just "smash and bash - no thinking required".

i dont fully understand the reference to WOW making us lazy in the article... possible because thats not how I play it.
When I read up on bossfight encounters in wow i'm actually 'researching' and I would sometimes spend hours getting all info and useful strategies involved.
If you go into any bossfight without knowing what to do (to a degree) - your ass will be kicked from the guild very quickly.
Researching something is of course different from just popping online and getting the answer. If you research something you definitely aren't lazy.

But for me any game with some puzzling side is a welcome change. Recently, Assasins Creed 2 had some of the best puzzles for me, and to have actually figured it all out without any help was a real accomplishment.

It comes down to perseverance and what type of person you are.
If you are willing to actually tough something out in real life, then you will most likely do the same in games or any other aspect of your life.

This is not merely restricted to the world of gaming. This is something that prevails in all walks of life. We have become a society of quick fixes and shortcuts in general. And that isn't always a bad thing, but so often you miss out on the experience of struggling and bumping your head by taking the shortcut.

As for gaming specifically, yeah, I think the majority of gamers worldwide are becoming lazy. I see many of you here are endurers and try and finish what you started without a guide or a help, but I think that especially in the new generation of gamers coming through, they are plain lazy.

Personally I find guides useful. I love puzzle games and in most modern games I rarely need to resort to using a guide since they tend to guide you pretty well.

But it's rare that I'm willing to spend more than an hour trying to figure something out. There are a lot of awesome games I want to play and I don't have the time or patience to get stuck on one for days or even weeks. The puzzles add to the fun of the game, as soon as they disrupt the flow of the story or gameplay they become annoyances that detract from the experience.

Since most of us work, and since the number of cool games being produced have increased significantly in the past few years I just feel there are better ways to spend your time than being frustrated.

Probably one of the puzzle games I enjoyed the most was portal. I found it sufficiently challenging to make me stop and think at times, but never become frustrated or bored.

I've used guides to find things like Cog tags, the only time I've used a guide exclusively is for Overlord cause it had no map.

I start to use guides when i want to finish a game and start a new one. usually its because game starting to become to long

You know I have so little time to play games anymore and so many games simultaneously clamouring for my attention that if I get stuck I will turn to help. I actually appreciate the little pointers in Mario Galaxy 2. If I have to sukkel over one section in a game I'll give it up and the game will end up on the back burner. It's not laziness, it's just a lack of time.

Alpha Protocol had a achievement for the PC game and I thing they are use fill in the sence that you get perk's for achievement, but other wise there is no point to achievement's in games. I feel satisfyed with finnishing a game more than play the game over and over and over again just to get 1 achievement.

Tarryn you addict you want a shoulder to cry on about your addiction?

Yeah sure Achievements are starting to rune games if you let them if its your mission to get them sure it can rune a game. Its a way better feeling getting and Achievement out of the blue. Got a few ones in left for dead 2 and was so chuffed about it made me warm and fuzzy for a few sec before I got over it.

The ones in Alien swarm was more like just to have achievements in the game, the only really challenging ones was the complete it in a set time.
