Are we going to start seeing the effects of SEACOM soon?

I initially thought the SEACOM wouldn't do much for ADSL prices at inception, but whilst browsing the OpenWeb site yesterday I came across this. Basically it's uncapped 384Kbps ADSL for R599/month. Currently the cheapest product of equal calibre I can find cashes in at R999/month. That's quite the reduction and a very viable option for me when it's released!

Any other deals you guys have noticed?

Haven't noticed anything unusual.

I was under the impression that Seacom had not switched on yet and that when it does, us consumers shouldn't expect it to make a difference any time soon.

I would like 10Gb @ 512k international for the R323 I pay for my Do Broadband Level 1 account.

SEACOM's launch has been delayed until next month...apparently because of pirate activity. Due to these products not yet being available, but SEACOM's pricing structure being available, it makes me question whether or not there's a link between the two.

I'm also very very interested to see what OpenWeb has up their sleeve with regards to the "high bandwidth" products aimed at gamers that allows for downloads from the most popular gaming sites. Hmmm...

I hope we see the effects soon ! I wont mind having 30gigs international per month and unlimited local bandwidth

I agree with the others, they said that the effect of seacom will only be seen in months to come and then there were other that said that ISP's would not necessarily pass the savings onto the end user.

That said its great to see them being the first to offer their clients reduced prices and higher caps, hopefully other ISP's will follow suite.

Guys sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but u wont see anything happening drastically for a long time.

Think of it this way...

An investor puts money into the SEACOM cable, obviously now u not going to put down your prices straight away since u proof that it works and YOU KNOW 100% you gonna get your investments worth.

For lamemens terms.

You own a food shop, you wanna sell a new bunnie chow that you thought of, u not going to put the price at a ridicoulsy low rate because its new.

Then again with 2010 coming up they might knock the prices to "appear" more on par with other countries. Remember next year the eyes of the world will be on sa and if the ISP's want international people to take note of them and invest they will have to make it look like they can give the same service as those abroad. But thats just if they aren't complete blithering idiots. So basically we're screwed.

Well, OpenWeb certainly seem to be cutting their prices. In one of their announcements they specifically mentioned it being because of SEACOM. As said in my first post, the price for uncapped I quoted is quite a steal compared to the current price!

This is from wikipedia, those guys are always right ;)

Pricing is intended to be significantly lower than current satellite or fibre pricing.

I'm looking forward to some nice price drops pretty soon. Big things also coming in October. Hopefully a nice price war or two before then! ;) Watch this space.

Hopefully the price will have a significant price drop but I wouldn't bet on it. I wonder if there will be any major teething problems.

I'm optimistic that it will reduce broadband prices or at least have some positive impact on the INTERNET, it could be speed, price or increased cappage.

I do not think there will be any drastic changes so early. Some companies will try and do something to make some sales, but not everyone will follow, especially the big guys. There will be a lot of touchy-feely stuff happening methinks...

I think there will be some bigger moves and think pricing will get better later in the year.
I expect some real changes next year though.
