So I have been an avid gamer since I was around 6 years old, now I am 29 and still gaming every day. Recently my awesome husband got us a PS4, and I will never go back to the damned PC chair, comfy couches forever! Since starting on the PS4, I have played a few games, but none was so great than Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. Below is my "review" of the game... feel free to comment...
When I started Assassin’s Creed Black Flag I thought it was going to be more of the same, like Assassin's Creed 3, but I was pleasantly surprised… I haven’t been this into a game since Tomb Raider, and that is saying something, since I’m probably one of the biggest Tomb Raider fans out there. All of them, mind you, even Angel of Darkness!
From spectacular graphics that leave me in awe to insanely intricate back stories and history lessons, I completely fell in love with this game and its world. It seems games like Never Alone and most RPGs worth their salt, focus a lot on the lore of a game, and it shows in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. Each and every little detail is polished, every new destination a real discovery. What could possibly be more fun than having your own pirate brig and sailing the unexplored worlds with your me hearties while singing shanties like “Drunken Sailor “ and “Homeward Bound “ That in itself is an experience. I love it after I have gone to an island and return to the ship, the pirates all cheer and say “Captain’s on deck!†or “Captain’s at the wheel!†or when I jump into the shallow water it’s “Captain fancied a swim!â€
In fact this game is so good in so many aspects, I could write a book about it! There are just so many little things that make this game a masterpiece. Kudos to the team who made this game, it is a piece of art. The music, the voice acting, the sound effects, the animation, game play, everything. It’s amazing. I am also appreciative of the “no blood†option as I have a young daughter, and she loves swimming in the sea and collecting Animus fragments and exploring islands with me. It’s easy enough for a child to play too and the little villages are literally alive with the bustling of people, coming and going, each carrying on with their lives. They all have conversations with one another, entertaining ones too!
Edward the main character is an interesting man, a real scoundrel, and on top of that a world class assassin. Fighting in this game is a lot of fun. You can go the stealth route and pick the Spanish soldiers off one by one and drag them away, or go out guns or swords blazing. Of course you’re supposed to take the stealth route but it’s a lot of fun to also just charge in and slaughter the lot.
Edward moves very fluently, it’s never an annoyance to turn him or I never felt the controller is too sensitive, he mostly goes where I point him. Almost everything in the world is climbable and it’s such fun to scale the highest trees or outposts in search of treasure… or just to enjoy the sunset.
Have I mentioned this game looks stellar? It often gets dark and then the world lights up too, on sea it gets misty or you even get huge storms, and fighting another ship in a storm is quite an experience. You can buy and craft new items for the captain, recruit more pirates, upgrade your brig, even make it more appealing to the eye, and of course buy new guns and swords.
I am trying to think of a flaw in this game, and so far I have not encountered any huge ones. In fact, the game has never crashed, never had a bug that I noticed, that influenced the story in any way. (here’s looking at you Ether One!)
If you are looking to get lost in another world, where almost everything is possible and where your inner explorer would be satisfied wholeheartedly, this is the game for you. 9/10
