ASUS 1201N Gaming Netbook

I just ordered an ASUS 1201N netbook to use for mobile internet access
and also for playing games on the road.

Anyone else out there tried any games on this netbook.

It's got an NVidia ION GPU, so should work pretty good with most games.

The Asus Eee PC 1201N will come with:

12.1 inch LCD display with HD resolution of 1366 x768
Intel Atom N330 1.6GHz Dual Core processor (x64)
NVIDIA’s ION graphics
2GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM
250GB hard drive + an additional 500GB of online storage
Windows 7 Home Premium,
802.11b/g/n Wi-fi
Bluetooth
Ethernet 10/100, HDMI, VGA, 3 USB 2.0 ports, SD card slot, mic jack, headphones jack, 0.3MP web camera.
Multi-touch touchpad
6 cell battery with up to 8 hours of usage.

Netbooks are designed for portability, office use and web surfing, not much else.

It may have nVidia graphics but you ain't gonna get far with that Atom CPU when it comes to gaming, unless you're into the slightly older releases.

I have to agree with you there Rusty..... Notepads in general have never sold well when it came to gaming... They are just not designed for gaming... and you become very limited to the games you can play etc... as you cannot upgrade them like you can with PC's and all that :)

I would rather spend 20K on upgrading a proper Desktop PC as you can chop and change whenever it suits you :)

Looking at the specs, you'll be able to play games like Plants and Zombies, but no real 3D games. the ION is good for HD Video playback with teh ATOM processor, but if your idea was to play a FPS on that rig, you're gonna be really dissapointed.

Nice toy though.

I'm taking the risk of importing it myself, for a total price of R4500 with a wireless mouse and shipping included. But I fear some customs duties when it arrives.

It still a bargain considering the cheapest one I've seen in SA was for R5660 (www.landmarkpc.co.za)

Yeah, I obviously won't be playing FPS's on it, too small screen and low frame rate, but even World of Warcraft 3 should run fine on it.

Yes, not a bad plaything... This is what that other person might like in the other thread, also looking for a laptop @ R6500.

I would say go for it and buy it... however remember this when it comes to upgrade time you wont find parts upgradable for that laptop but hey i suppose u can play most games on it.... so if it could run Crysis then ur set for a good couple yrs :)

Tadaaaaaa!!!!

OK, so the custom duties and all else cost R572 which would bring the total to about R5080. rounded up. including the MS wireless mobile mouse 3000.

I'm very impressed with this netbook, I'm about to load it with old games. Will also see how it handles Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2008 Express, since it's got dual-core processer with hyperthreading.

Windows 7 Home Premium scored it:
Desktop Graphics 4.0
Gaming Graphics 5.1

Don't remember the other stats.

ah nice ... i was looking into that laptop ... pity intel didnt come out with a new atom chip yet ... give us a review on how the gaming is on it evens if it isnt meant for gaming :)

Oh, gross. That "EEE PC" is embossed is just about the worst possible font, short of Comic Sans. What were they thinking?

Great netbook, though, and the 2GB RAM is a nice upgrade on standard models. I've got a Lenovo S10, and I love the thing. Obviously it's no good for hard gaming, but I run a lot of GOG.com classics on it.

Looks much better than the netbook I had a few months ago which I promptly got rid of. I found it horrible. The screen was so small, it couldnt even run a flash game never mind crysis or anything of the sort.

But yours looks much better. I had the Lenovo S10. Well built and ideal for travelling, anything else and forget. Yours on the other hand seems alot more decent.
