ASUS P8P67 Motherboard problems...

Alright, so I bought this motherboard and it took me hours and hors to install tonight. I mostly had booting problems where I couldn't get it to work with all my hard drives.

Eventually I gave up and took one out. Now I at least have it working with 2 hard drives. The other one simply won't detect. Has anyone got some advice or know the reason why it's doing this?

Which of those 8 SATA ports should I be using? Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Another problem I had is when you click on Performance mode in the Bios, it just switches off and resets it back to normal mode. Is there a reason why it can't overclock?

Hey, I think I know what's going on, I've got a P8P67 Evo and had the same problem.

It seems you can have only one MBR hard disk (and Windows must boot off it), and any others have to be formatted GPT, or completely unformatted when you start up the PC. So you're trying to connect a drive with something already on it, right?

Also: First post in the forums, yay!

Thanks for the reply guys. Yes, the two hard drives I had in my PC before the installation was a 500GB and a 250GB. My OS was on the one and all my other things and my games on the other. I also bought a new 500GB hard drive with nothing on. At first, it detected both. Then I formatted and installed windows on the 250 again. After that it didn't want to boot either.

I can't exactly remember the order of events, but I sukkeled long, for hours, to get my hard drives to boot. This must have been the hardest time I've ever had trying to install a new motherboard. Eventually I chucked out the 250GB HD and got Windows to install on the new 500GB. After that I struggled my ass off to make a partition on that drive to use it for storage and I was thinking of assigning about 100GB to my OS and use the rest for storage.

It turns out that I could only create a 250GB partition on my main drive at most. The rest is now assigned to my OS :/.

I also had another problem where my PC just rebooted after post when having 3 Hard disks connected. I was running 2 on one power cable and then I thought it might have been a power issue, so I connected the other one with a seperate power cable. It still did that, but then it posts and says "Overlock failed" when I didn't even overlock! Wtf! There's some weird shit going on here.

At least I have Windows installed and working now, but I'm a bit dissapointed that I lost so much space to not being able to create a bigger partition on my MBR HD.

@Darth: Is that a BIOS upgrade or drivers?

Bios update. Please do it first as it may sort out many issues. The recommended way is through flashdrive but you can use the windows-based update program by asus.

Secondly, try Easeus partition master. You can adjust partitions on the fly (or if os drive, then it will need a restart). It is my favourite app apart from OSes :P

Lol, cool dude, thank I will try it. And yes, I will upgrade my BIOS with a flash rather. The ASUS Bios is damn awesome though, you can use your mouse! :D

Woha. Seriously freaky coincidence here. I spent hours yesterday troubleshooting my Asus board (P5k) OC. Thread here on MyBB. Its basically the same underlying cause.

That "weird shit" isn't a bug its a feature. Basically if you kill power to the board completely (as in disconnect) like one would if say changing power cables for HDDs ;), it recognizes that the last config failed & figures must have been a bad OC.

Solutions to the "feature" include either not cutting the power or setting the AI tuner to Auto while your doing the setup. You can change it back to manual latter.

The relevant google terms are "asus cold boot" and "asus double post".

Check the manual...it usually has info on which SATA ports to use.

Aaah, awesome thanks dude. I read somewhere that the navy blue SATA ports are to be used for RAID configurations, so it's best to stay away from those. But anyhow, I put so much time and effort into this last night so I will put my other drive back when I format again. I don't feel like going through that whole schlep again today lol, I got about 30 minutes gametime last night :(.

But thanks a million for the info dude, I will go read up on it some.

Next time I should really RTFM. LOL

lol.most mobos have colour-coded SATA, have you never experienced this?

Anyway, if that doesn't sort it out... try the bios update (or do it anyway)

Sure.

Nah don't. Its bad enough that I spent hours sifting through the absolute rubbish out there. The range of claimed "solutions" out there is breathtaking. Even saw one claiming that switching on the PC screen on 1st fixed it for him. Mostly ppl are returning the boards & then losing their shit when the replacement acts the same way (i.e. according to design specs).

The only info out there worthwhile reading is this: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=3284432&postcount=11

Do the BIOS update anyway though....if you do it early & it bombs then its easier to convince the supplier to return the board.

You can usually disable the RAID controller in the BIOS. Also disable PATA if you can.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that BIOS update as Darth said. This BIOS is unlike anything I've seen before, that's why I'm getting quite confused. I had an Intel board about 2 years ago before going AMD again and I have to say this is something else. I'm so confused as to what to disable and what to leave on, what mode to put the SATA in etc and this board has so many features it's not even funny. But thanks for that link dude.

I'm so glad it's not a bug. I recall reading something about the Sandy Bridge boards being screwed and I almost thought "omg, this isn't happening" but thank goodness this board is the new revision, right?

All I can say is that overclocking on this chipset is going to be an adventure and a half....

Oh, and that bolded part made me grin. I see those fatal PEBCACs are still around ha ha.
