ATI 5870 - Who has the best price?

Cheapest prices ive found would be auction on bidorbuy.
If you keep an eye out for the seller called "StreetRacer"
last week wednesday he sold 2 of them on auction for 1.6k for the XFX 5870
Dont know if he will be putting more up this week, but just keep an eye out for them

No thanks. Will avoid auction buys thank you.

There are three left at R1500 as of this morning. www.computersonly.co.za Speak to Vernon and ask about it. Faarking good deal if you ask me. Axiz has, but their cheapest is R2400 ex VAT apparently.

Got it. Installed it and:

Original bench on Unigine:

New setup with xfire and CPU OC'ed. OC didn't make a huge difference though even before xfire out of interest. Maybe a 1 frame or two. Anyway:

Does XFire really still make sense for such old cards. The 6950 is going for R2900 at most places and I would think it gives better performance. Unfortunately the 6970 doesn't do so good in XFire and you may need to remove one to get more frames in some games so don't know how the 6950 would do.

R1500 to R2500 is a big difference. How much markup do these guys add?

In a word, yes. This purchase made a lot of sense for me. For R1500, I have scored a huge benefit. Maybe not immediately visible in most games, but in the long run with newer games being released with more demanding graphics(BF3), I have bought myself some future proofing for a minimal amount. To have bought a new card that could give me the equivalent kind of protection, I would've had to spend R4500 plus.

Also, the current generation AMD 6000 series graphics cards are basically all just 5000 series cards that have been souped up and tweaked. They are not a completely new designed board. They were simply made to compete against Nvidia's new 500 series, which is a brand new series.

As for the scaling, in current gen games there is already an improvement, but it will really come into it's own in the future.

As for the 6950 being better, um no.

Nice price you got for that card. Also had two running in xfire, but due to space constraints in my case I had to remove one to make place for my overpriced soundcard :(

Yeah I personally would of sold the 5870, got a 6970 or maybe even the 6990 depends really how much cash I had, and then crossfire'd it later, but that's just me.

@ the OP try http://www.pricecheck.co.za/ next time really helps me find stuff at the lowest price.

For what he paid the performance gain is huge compared to selling his existing card and buying 2 newer models which might give him a minimal performance gain compared to this current setup.

Did you even look at the benchmarks? the two 5870s beat a 580, never mind the measly 6970. And he paid R1500, so maybe would've had R3000 altogether if he sold his card, what would that have got him? maybe a 6950 if he was lucky.
