Minecraft

My Entry:

Minecraft

Now I know everyone straight away thinks "psh not Minecraft again", but this is exactly my point. The world of Minecraft is endless (pretty much), and it is one of the few games that keeps sucking me back in, few games have this ability to really envelop a player in its world.

The sandbox world of minecraft has so many possibilities, with the community different additions to the game it is the true definition of re-playability in a game.

The vanilla survival mode offers hours and hours of game time, and creative mode gives players a platform to unleash their true artist or architect, and players have done just that, things like the entire country of Denmark have been remade, or the entire world of Azeroth from World of Warcraft.

Minecraft is truly one of the most influential games of our generation, the giant procedurally generated worlds keep players exploring and surviving, and an active community ensures the games "freshness" is withheld with thousands of mods to try out. There is an infinite supply of different modpacks and game changing mods, which can completely change your game experience.

Here is my attempt at recreating the iGame logo:

Entry: The wolf among us

First of all, a shout out to Mister44.
Thanks for the steam gift!

Now onto the game moment, or game rather, since I finished the game in one sitting.
It. Was. That. Addicting.

If you are familiar with telltale's walking dead, then you should know what to expect in terms of game play.
If not, here's a quick synopsis:
Drama, making quick decisions, regretting your decision, and manly tears.

The Wolf Among Us is set in the "life after happily ever after" of traditional fairy tales.
Focusing on how prince and princesses cope with the harsh reality of New York City.
Your choices affects how the story plays out.

Character cameos are really well done, drawing out my childhood memories of various fairy tales.
Tales of the three little pigs, little red riding hood, snow white (yes, I read snow white as a child :p) and much more.

The artwork is fantastic, paying homage to its root of being a graphic novel.
And boy, graphic it is. Some scenes were so graphic, it left me a bit nauseating (or maybe it was just me having dinner while playing).

Being a story driven game, it's rather difficult to describe the moments that make me realise that I can express emotions.
I'll say this: If can play the first episode from start to end then sincerely tell me you are not hooked, I'll pay you R500*! :D

*T&Cs apply.

ENTRY: DOTA 2

Let me just put it like this...

I'm sorry for not going the expected route for an entry by namedropping an unheard of, quirky, underground, undiscovered gem with fresh and fun new mechanics which was never seen in a game before.

Dota 2 just takes the cake when it comes to gaming and is probably THE best game ever created for a plethora of reasons. If a game ain't broke don't fix it and this MOBA game certainly wins in all aspects, because of the:
-The massive online community.
-super low hardware requirements.
-Seamless ability to have fun with your friends.
-It's free.
-It's a staple game, other games are just novelties and die off.
-It's incredibly deep strategy wise.
-You can earn money professionally.

And with the recent works to get Dota 2 users to create custom maps (still in alpha) ala the good ol' days of the war3 twilight server it can only get better! Personally can't wait for this to happen.

I'd even go as far to say that it really becomes a lifestyle if you want it to be. When a single game has the power to transcend being just a once-off experience and become an actual part of your life for years on end - that really says something. Dota 2 for me is synonymous with having a braai and beers around a fire on the weekend with your tjommies. I've been playing this game since 2007 and I'm still playing it to this day and that alone is testament to the mass appeal of this single game.

What else can I say? Dota 2 is a phenomenon that is here to stay.

Entry: Star Wars – Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

This game is quite old, and like Edelweiss I apologise for it not being a recent AAA title or a cool indie game, but here goes…

I’ll admit that I am not that big of a Star Wars fan. I was born and grew up after the original Star Wars films were made, and even when I was little I was far more interested in playing with Lego and making space craft much like that seen in the films, than actually watching the films which blared on in the background while I made a mess on the carpet. When the new trilogy came out, I was baffled by all the fanfare and annoyed by people who insisted on talking like Jar Jar Binks, who surely wins hands down when it comes to being the most irritating character to ever stumble his way on to the silver screen. I hadn’t ever played a Star Wars game, and there have been many over the years.

Jedi Outcast changed that.

I had witnessed people play the original Dark Forces, and I had even played the demo of the second game (or perhaps it was the expansion, Mysteries of the Sith, I'm not too sure), but I hadn’t been as amped for a game and the Star Wars franchise as I was after I had my first taste of Jedi Outcast, after playing the demo of it over a decade ago. And that probably goes into contention for the game demo I played the most.

After that I recall digging in the movie cabinet in the lounge and finding all the Star Wars VHS tapes and watching them to see what I had missed out on years earlier.

I’m ashamed to admit, but I even took to lightsaber battles with friends (I was still a teenager… so what?) and fantasising about being a Sith – that’s right, the force is corrupted with this one. I’ve always liked villains, and I tend to dream about being one too. If I had to pick a favourite Star Wars character, it would be Darth Vader, pre or post life support system, there can be no doubt. James Earl Jones ftw.

I remember playing the full version of Jedi Outcast briefly at a friend’s house not long after that and I was especially wowed by the multiplayer. This game used the Quake III Arena engine, and as a result you could play with bots – bots who ran around with lightsabers. It was arguably the most impressed I had ever been with a multiplayer game. And nothing has quite matched it since.

I saw the game on sale not too long ago and purchased it, and I've been reliving all the experiences I had from more than a decade ago while playing it.

The singleplayer experience takes a while to get into, admittedly. It is slow going and the first two or three levels drag on a bit and it feels like a mediocre first-person shooter. This is something I have grown accustomed to while playing games developed by Raven – the most mediocre a gamer can get. But once you regain your force powers and your lightsaber, things get interesting. The level design is probably the game’s weak point but this is made up for by being able to possess and level up Jedi and Sith force powers and lightsaber skills until the point where you become a virtual Jedi master. And the lightsaber battles are worth hanging on for alone. In the end, it’s not so much the game – it’s good, don’t get me wrong, but more than that it’s how it makes you feel: powerful – and that is just about every gamer’s dream.

I’m right aren’t I, Kevin?
