Avoiding customs

I'm bringing in an iPhone 4 from Singapore in the next couple of weeks and I seriously do not want to be raped by customs.

Any tips on getting it through at minimal expense?

Be casual, dont look as if your hiding something... also pop a MTN or vodacom sim in and carry it as ur working phone, they will never think to switch it on and see if it is.

Ive flown back and forth between SA and the UK about 8 to 10 times and have yet to be stopped by customs....

Perhaps I should clarify: I'm having a mate buy it from the Apple Store in Singapore and then ship it over to me.

You reckon it's a better idea to toss the box away and slap a SIM in it to make it look used?

Yep, they only care about new shit. What are the chances Thabo and Tandi know the diff between a Iphone 3 and the IPhone4?
Alternatively have him wrap it like its a gift for someone...

I guess they could, you could use the "I forgot" excuse and hope they dont nail u....

I don't think that has anything to do with it. I travel a lot, always take my laptop and camera with me, and never declare it. I also bring stuff over from overseas and I've never been stopped by customs. So long as its 1 item and it's unboxed, they can't do anything to you.

As for having someone ship it, I have no idea. Gift may be a good idea, but I can't say I have ever tried that one out.

Ditto, have yet to be stopped once. And I've brought in R2000 worth of watercooling, an iPod, an iDog+iCat and a wakeskate...... in one trip. Just tell your mate to walk casually past the customs peeps.

But if you want to be 100% sure, tell him to unbox it and keep it on him.

Ditto again, I traveled last year to Eng and Aus with my laptop and didn't declare it.

Unfortunately it's being sent via DHL so I've gotta pray that they don't decide to have a look inside the package. I'm considering unboxing it but I want the joy of defiling the packaging myself :(

You reckon they can't nail me if the phone looks used?

Wonder if your cell mate will be called Bubba? :p

As long as he's not called syco.

Well, I've ordered and received some Blu-rays from Amazon.co.uk thrice now, and twice been charged customs upon collection at post office. On R300 odd order, paid R50 customs fee. Still a bargain paying total of R350 for all 6 Harry Potter Blu-rays!!!

I think get him to wrap it like a gift is ur best bet, that way they cant say u bought it or ur recieving goods. Ur mate just sent you a gift....

either get it wrapped as a gift,

or send a vodacom/mtn sim card, then when he ships it to you, unboxed obviously - he must incl a message to line of "you forgot your phone while you were here or something similar

Okay, new plan: I have a mate going off to London next week and she's going to smuggle one through customs for me. Hopefully if it's unboxed and in her pocket no one will check or ask any questions.

Shot for all the suggestions, dudes.

When i brought a US Wii back to South Africa i never got charged customs.

Same when i get goods sent to me from my aunt in US she always sends it as a gift so they never charge customs at all.

Damn! If they stopped you that would have been quite a bit to pay customs for!
