Sorry if this is a re post, but I haven't seen anything for this, though not really gaming hence posting in Off Topic.

Axxess customers can now get Netflix and Hulu – but are they breaking the law?

Internet service provider Axxess has just announced a new service it’s offering for free to its DSL subscribers. And it’s very promising. It’s called Global Axxess, and what it basically does is allow you to use services which are geographically locked by making your browser appear as if you’re living overseas. Many South Africans already use similar services like UnoTelly, but that’s an extra R500-R750* a month on top of your regular ADSL charges.

Ya i read about this over the weekend...

Its great to see that more and more things are becoming available in SA, regardless of the "loop holes" or what ever they are going through... The launch of that service Vidi last week, will hopefully open the flood gates...

I refuse to link up DSTV again... They rip us of at such a ridiculous rate... Until they let us choose what channels we get im not interested...

What is concerning is what was mentioned in the article.

Technically, we shouldn't be able to watch Netflix, Hulu etc. Global Axxess is a work around for this which is illegal and could cause a lot of potential shit for themselves and their customers.

Looking forward to seeing how this pans out.

I have it,haven't tried it yet.
Will check it tonight.

Would be great to hear some feedback on it... I think its a bit ridiculous to charge people for the movies though... and R27 for a movie is like the same as a DVD store, and yes its convenient, but for a DVD store its like death... they have to purchase the DVD's and pay rent etc... that warrants the money... for a streaming service it doesnt make sense to me... If the series comes at a subscription fee so should movies... like on netflix...

Awesome! Oh wait....

I don't know why they are not stating why it was shut down but it's pretty obvious why, for those of you who don't know of or never tried streaming, the media which you watch basically has to be licensed in the country you are viewing it in. It's copyrighted in the USA/UK and SA does not own the copyright.

That essentially in my case blocks out 99% of the stuff on CR.

Lol... Could have seen this one coming... They were silly to try and get this to work without researching it properly...

There are so many options out there though, this wont stop people that want the service...

I was under the impression that the legal issue is not that it must be licensed in a certain region but rather that a service can't show if another provider has exclusive license in a region.

So netflix runs series that DSTV has exclusive rights to in (South) Africa.

didn't think it would last long.

here in SA the monopolies don't like competition, so I think M/C had something to do with this

I could be mistaken or could have used copyright incorrectly, but that is what I understand from Crunchyroll when I try to watch stream on it, "Not licensed in your Region".

With exclusive rights from what I understand it just means that the chosen broadcaster (alone) is allowed to air that specific show. From what I recall Netflix has a lot of Netflix only shows that do not show on any other channel, they probably want to protect their own interests.
