Bad GPU chip?

Hello guys,

I recently (less than a month ago) bought a Gigabyte GTX 550 Ti card to replace my old GT 220.
The problem I have with the new card is that the display crashes with most games at all but the lowest settings.

I have the latest Nvidia drivers (295) installed after a clean OS (Win 7 32bit) installation.

I tested my PSU (500W) with a multi meter and it does not drop below 11.89v on the +12v rail during the games or during crashes.

When I use MSI Afterburner to de-clock the card from the 970mhz factory overclock to 910mhz, the crash issue disappears. Issues start up again from 930mhz upwards.

Is it safe to assume I have a wonky chip? Or could something else be causing the problem?

I run:

Intel 2.93 Wolfdale Core 2 Duo
4 gig ram (DDR 2 i think)
Asus p5kpl-am se mobo
seagate 500gig SATA primary

In my unprofessional opinion, I'd say that it's pretty safe to assume something is up with that GPU.

Sounds very much like what my old card did shortly before it died completely.

You need to get the updated bios for the chip. I had the same issue with the 560ti.

Flash the card and all will be well.

Thanks for the replies.

I have read that the mobo onboard HD audio drivers conflict with the GPU HD audio drivers. I will give that some attention. I doubt that would be it, since playing with core clock solves the problem.

Also received some advice to bump my voltage up, as some factory OC'd cards are not stable at stock voltages (which kinda makes sense in relation to what I am experiencing). Only issue with that is, I think my cards voltages are locked:mad:

Failing all that, I will go give the bios flash a go. I tried googling for my bios, but cant find an update for my specific card...il keep trying.

Will report back after I check it out tonight
