Battlefield 3 Beta

Is it just me, or are there really a lot of non-SA people connecting. I just came from Tomahawk and there were at least 3.
I think they knew each other. Is this because SA is the only country in Africa that hosts for games that don't support dedicated servers? Say they're from DRC, or Botswana or something, does that mean they're connecting via ISDN or dial-up?

This almost makes me feel semi-OK for the fact that we pay R350 a month for internet that people in the UK don't get anymore. They get uncapped, unshaped 24Mbps for R300/25 pounds.
64 times the speed for 50 bucks less? Almost.

The problem with the Beta is that there are no Ping Limiters for the servers, so basically anyone anywhere can connect
This means that the international players, the ones that (And I'm basing this on a lot of prior experience) literally do not know what latency means hit "Quick Match" and get dumped onto our servers

We will however limit ping for the servers as soon as this function is available - we have been told that the retail will support this

@ Darth
Thanks, I have to admit that our new Server Hardware is performing really well, there will however be one or two lag spikes on the machines as the servers that crash restart
I've noticed that it does cause a slight drop in Server FPS when another instance is starting up on the same machine

I just don't understand why they don't have an in game latency meter that's just a completely daft thing not to have.

Yeah, I noticed some weird server phenomena between matches... other than the bad spelling on the load screens of course :P

Have you guys done something specific that WAGE etc haven't? I think they thought that they could run the same number of games as the Metro map on a server machine and pipe. But i am not certain, just making presumptions :)

I can't comment on what other hosts do on their hardware
We rolled out new machines for our BF3 Server Instances, and as stated they are performing above expectations
We can actually run the same amount of 64 Player Servers on a Physical Box as 32's it makes no difference

The Beta will end today at 12 Midday CET
Thanks for all the feedback provided by all groups in terms of testing as well as the great support you've all shown for the iGame Servers.
We will see everyone back online once the Retail game is released

The resource usage of Caspian Border along with 64 players is rather high compared to the standard 32 slot Metro servers that were hosted prior to the release of Caspian Border. We had five instances running (Compared to 8 on Metro), unfortunately there was lag encountered but this was also due to the beta itself as lag had been experienced on most other servers. There definitely is an increase in resource usage when the servers reach a capacity of 64 players. We will likely be getting new hardware for the release.

I didn't notice any lag that originated from the "Beta Itself" tbh, I know there are hardware issues relating to the requirements of running BF3 and that the 64 Players servers are more demanding on the hardware being hosted on (See RSP Mailing list discussion on Core Clock Speed SiX, you should have gotten those mails)

Running the servers is all about scaling,Hardware specific testing is required before rollout

Anyway, as stated in my previous post, Beta Draws to a close in an hour, so that gives everyone some time to prep for the release

I know a few guys who will suffer some serious withdrawal symptoms for the next week :)

There were definitely reports of lag specifically on Caspian Border on several servers from several GSP's, check this for instance. Saw the mails, thanks:)

Anyways as the beta draws to a close, few guys have a game in the last hour, trying to join for a game, but having connection probs. Has been great fun, some really fun times over the last few days.

Actually, and only because you posted that video, I'd like to point out a few things, things you should be aware of from being part of RSP Mailing list
Not trying to be difficult, just making sure everyone understands that the lag is not to be blamed on the Beta or the Server Software
After the Awesome work that DICE have put over the timeframe of the Beta I'd hate for the public to think that they somehow dropped the ball, those guys work like machines and they have really really worked hard during especially the Beta to provide everyone with the tools they need to run and enjoy the game even in its Beta Phase

That Video was posted on the 28th, Day one of Beta, before any patches were rolled out
There was a KNOWN issue on Caspian for the first few days of release
There is also no way of knowing that the lag in that vid, or any vid for that matter is not related to Server Hardware or Infrastructure, or Client Side Issues

Thanks for the update xerosix. I will make the assumption that DICE/EA will make server optimisations before release.

I can imagine the extra 32 players and much larger map will put much more load on the server. And on the network side it is a much larger strain

Edit for new posts:
I am just trying to understand and help with the betterment of the servers and don't want to cause a row between gaming providers. What my intention is that all work together and all of us have a better experience. :)

What I have noticed is that even at 64 players the iGame servers have been running great yet the SGS, WAGE, Hyper all have/had lag. So if iGame are doing something that makes things run smoother I think it is something that the other providers can learn.

Anyway, BETA is over so this is pretty much moot until the final is out. Can't WAIT! :D

The only problem i had with the beta is shooting a guy 20 times, he shoots me once and i die...

Wonder why the battlefield beta is still on the origins store free section?

Yesterday I played with 59 other players on iGame Phoenix, Not sure what you guys did but it was SUPER smooth and for the first time I REALLY enjoyed myself with the beta!
