The Battle For Humanity’s Future Begins In Battlestar Galactica Online
Mike Fahey — Sound the klaxons! Battlestar Galactica Online has just warped out of closed beta and into open beta, allowing players all over the world to dive head-first into free-to-play, browser-based battles set in the universe of the hit Syfy television show.

Players looking to join the conflict between the humans and the Cylons need only register at the game's official website and hit the play button. Within minutes they'll be plunged into the depths of outer space, piloting a fighter vessel and shooting down sensor arrays like a pro.

At least that's what happened when I started up a character on the Cylon side. Figured I'd cast my lot with the winning team right off the bat. Silly meatbags.

So far it plays like one would imagine a free-to-play, browser-based MMO would play. It's relatively attractive and handles itself well, though flight stick support would be appreciated.

Hiot up the link below to check it out for yourself.

I tried it out last night. Looks great for a browser game, but doesn't run smoothly on a 384kbps line. There is almost a 1 second delay when you press keys. They need to improve net code. 1000ms at the moment is no good. However with that being said, it does look promising.

Played it for an hour or so. Must say it's surprisingly "full featured" for a browser game. Got all thing usual MMO things, feels like a "simpler" version of EvE [in terms of menus and skills and such] .

It still feels a little unplayable when you're out in the open with alot of other players (i.e. right outside the Galactica) , but tutorial and solo missions was fine. Combat is similar to WoW in the sense that you have an "auto-attack" that fires as you get in range and then you press 1,2,3 etc to launch other weapons like missiles. So it's not too "Actiony" like Wing Commander, main thing i had to do was making sure my ship face the enemy ship...which is standard for all MMOs i'd say.

Your ship have the usual "slots" which you can upgrade, you need to salvage and/or mine materials to buy these things. You also gain levels and train "skills" to further upgrade your ship.

My first ship felt a little annoying with the controls, turning extremely slowly , making the game feel sluggish, but looking at the upgrades for "improving maneuverability" i assume this can be fixed.

As for the content itself, i only did like 2 recon missions [fly to waipoints, shoot some probes/droids, fly back] , there's also "Dailies" which sound similar to usual "fetch, escort " type of stuff.

Graphics looks pretty good, planets and other ships and space looks acceptable i'd say. Not as slick and smooth as EvE though.

Sounds, it's mostly quiet [no voice etc] , the music score is nice though.

Anyway, it's free, looks like something i'll play on my laptop when i'm bored .
