I remember trying to hack the savegames to get more weapons. Worked but didn't look so good if you put too many in. 
And the "in-game" way to get more money was to wait for the high risk investment to go up, save the game, reload, and wait it out again. I remember sitting on the floor with my dad's CGA-equipped XT and some friends, starting it from the floppy and all that ancient stuff. The best of times! 
Still love the series and I've played all the games related to the series (Battletech 1 & 2, Mech Commander 1, Gold and 2, & Mechwarrior 1,2,3 & 4. Did I miss any?). When I found out about MechCommander Gold, just one online shop in Canada still sold it. Was quite an event for me to receive that package in the post.
