Be careful when trying to buy Windows 7 from Makro

Hi All,

I thought I would post this to inform anyone wanting to buy Windows 7 off the shelf instead of ordering it online (like you should be doing). I went to Makro to check if they had Windows 7 Ultimate because at the time Take 2 was out of stock and Incredible Connection's price on Windows 7 is simply put, stupid.

Anyways, I was willing to pay a premium for Windows 7 Ultimate and took the display box of Windows 7 Ultimate off Makro's shelf for the nice price of R2999. The sales-person told me I had to pay up-front so that they could use the invoice to release the actual copy from the store room.

I did so and after waiting for about 15 minutes for the sales person to come back from the store room I was told they didn't have any more copies of the Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.

Unfortunately I paid via credit card, so they reversed the transaction afterwards, however I am still waiting for the credit to reflect back in my account....so we'll see how that goes, in the meantime they're grabbing interest from MY inconvenience.

So...when you walk into a store looking to buy Windows 7, ask for the physical PROOF that they have stock of the one that you're looking for, and rather stay away from Makro when it comes to IT-related stuff ;)

Thank goodness Take 2 had a small stock level of Ultimate later in the day and I got one, I see they're out of stock on it again though, so the Ultimate edition is either selling VERY well, or stock is very limited.

For a laugh, Incredible Connection is selling Windows 7 Ultimate for R3399.00. To compare that, Take 2 sells the same thing for R2200.00. I don't know what I was thinking going to the shops to buy this, but I paid the price with some uber-inconvenience.

Thanks for the Makro heads up - another reason why I do all my shopping online.
 
Yeah this has often irritated me with Makro, they insist you pay first before even going to get the stock, and to boot they take 15 - 20 mins to go fetch the item. Annoying.

I am sure it will reflect on your card by tomorrow. Banks normally do a card run at night.

Yip. The issue is, this was yesterday already lol. I'll wait until tomorrow afternoon and if it's not in there by then, to quote Tudd Russel: "It's Go Time!"
 
R2200... what the hell.

Don't understand how it works when MS are desperate to get people off WinXP, but then charge an arm and a leg for the upgrade.

I was tempted to get Win7 but that just seems excessive. Hopefully that price will drop next year.

Uh, that's for the Ultimate Edition.

Windows 7 starts at around R1000 for Home Basic Edition.

. Off topic question, but what's the difference between basic home edition and the ultimate supreme OVER 9000 version??

LOL, dude you didn't see the release price for Windows Vista Ultimate did you? It was WELL over R3000, and that was online pricing, I didn't even bother looking at IC or Makro for their prices back then. To be very honest, R2200 for the Top-of-the-line Retail edition Windows 7 is NOT that bad.

You could always go the Ubuntu route and not pay a cent?

Maybe I have swine flu (again), but this is one of the very few occasions where I think the OS from Microsoft is worth-while.

and can i win some cash? as i will only switch from vista ultimate if i can get me hands on win 7 ultimate.
 
That's quite a chunk of cash to plough into an OS. Ouch. Look forward to hearing how people are liking the experience though - I'm keen when the MS Schools agreement starts licensing it.
 
imho Win 7 is worth the money, its an OS, not a game you'll be using a few months.
I love XP, I loaghed Vista, just didnt like it (very non technical terms, I know... :) and gave my some issues) but Win 7 feels great and handles my games and apps great!

If the Ultimate is too much, go for the Home Premium, everything the gamer would need...

Defos agree with Home Premium, unless you're in a corp. office win Win2008R2 servers - none of the features in Ultimate have any use @ all.

Also remember, an OS running more things(more services) is slower, with Ultimate you're gonna have more services running than you need - home prem less = faster if you look at it that way. . . just a thought; use it/don't use it.

My cousin tells me you can get Win7 from MS for R300.00, if you have a valid
Vista License. He's in IT, so it's probably DSP...
