A lobster thrown live into boiling water may suffer for many seconds, said a scientist who argued Thursday that crustaceans can likely feel pain.

A set of experiments on crabs revealed that the animals are willing to give up a valuable dark hiding place in order to avoid an electric shock, an indicator of pain, said a study in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Crabs in the study learnt to avoid the shelter in a laboratory tank where they had repeatedly...read more here: Be kind to your seafood

Why not 1st kill the poor thing, before dumping it into a pot of hot boiling water.:(
Easier said than done. You need to kill it without breaking the shell. That leaves electric shock & freezing if I recall correctly. Both of those come with their own set of problems.

All afaik though - I've never even eaten a lobster...boiled alive or not. hmm maybe I should...

Have to agree with Havoc, it is not the easiest thing in the world. As a fish keeper, we have debated the best ways to euthanise sick fish in depth.

Ironically the best ways is to: Chop the head off after knocking it out on a rock, (it is also why you see some fishermen bash fish heads against rocks when they have been caught) - leaving the fish still edible.

The way most fishkeepers do it now is by putting clove oil in water, add the fish - its like an anaesthetic. They fall asleep (it is also how most people are able to treat fish directly on affected areas) the more clove oil the quicker the fish dies.

The old way was to put tropical fish in ice water - they believed the ice water shocks the system and killed them fast. This is still used to a lesser degree, the other way was just to stick the fish in a tub of water in the freezer. They believe the fish just slowed down until the heart stopped.

Noooooooooo so not allowed, do you know how many fishies can survive that!?!?!?!

You also had people who released fish into natural dams and rivers

..............AWESOME! :p

That is why you cut the head off in one single cut :P

Ekke kannie dit doen nie, te squimish :P SO I use clove oil :P

WHAT THE HELL!!! Why do you all want to kill your tropical pet fish!!! :wtf:

I flushed mine AFTER they died, but never had to kill one!!!

With fish caught from the sea, a quick way to do this is a knife or screw driver through the head... works immediately.

TBlaar - Only had to do it a couple of times, I had some siamese fighter females that developed culminarus - untreatable and horrible way for fishies to die, so I killed them.
