Being a gamer in SA - pros and cons

Firstly:

I would disagree here personally. I know many think it is better each year, but to me it is the same thing over and over. If it was not for the NAG lan, rAge would've ceased to exist a long time ago. This is merely my opinion.
Other than that, yeah, overall we have it pretty okay here. Yeah there are some issues, but overall it's okay. One con I do agree with is our very small pool of players. Inevitably, it is always the same bunch of players night in and night out gunning for each other. Now while it is fun to play with and against your mates, after a few months you might almost be playing against bots, as we all have distinctive patterns and tend to stick to them. Overseas however, you can just imagine the MASSIVE pool of players to play with and against.

Player pool is my biggest problem, it's almost impossible to find players on FFA/TDM BlackOps server's that arn't Hardcore mode. Very frustrating, and by some miracle if players are online it's the same people every night.
When I was in the UK there was absolutely no problem finding huge amounts of people of all different skill levels playing just about every game available online with each other. Oh and local Xbox360 / PS3 gaming is a nightmare, have you tried to load up a game of Uncharted 2 multiplayer... it doesn't happen.
There are just far too few gamers as a whole in South Africa.

Mortal Kombat is being released here on the 29th of April while the rest of the World gets it by the 19th and 21st. I really don't want to comment on what South Africa "pretends" to offer gamers. Gaming is a hobby made for first World countries. South Africa has indoor plumbing and occasional electricity. Hardly first World qualities.

The problem with Rage is that there's not a lot of "exclusive" stuff to be seen there. If you keep up to date with all the latest gaming news and trailers from the internet then you've pretty much seen all that Rage would have to offer.
Rage has got nothing on shows like E3. Until then, it's pretty much a money spinner. And the people that hang out at Rage make me LOL. Seriously - It's like a freakshow.

I can agree on some points made so far about rAge - there's very little new that gets revealed there - and it's nothing on expos like PAX and E3 (etc etc - there's a massive list). At the same time, it does at least give the guys stuck in SA something to go to and experience things first hand - something I find encouraging was that fact that NCSoft actually had reps down here to show the demo of GW2.
I wasn't even aware they knew we existed down here. At the same time, it was very scaled down compared to what you see at international shows - where they at least had playable demos and panels. So there's a very long way to go still. Anecdotal evidence (since last year was the first time I attended) suggests that the show was smaller than previous years. It needs to grow a lot more and pull much more attendance before we can lure developers down here properly - it's a long distance and it needs to be considered worthwhile.
Taking everything into context, I do believe the gaming scene has improved tremendously over the last - hmmm, dunno, 10 years or so. Telkom's a bitch, yes, we all know that, but at the very least we can now play overseas with a relative minimum of fuss, we have access to services like Steam and faster line-speeds mean we don't need to wait for 2 months to download a small game. I remember playing Quake3 on a European server over 56k ISDN. Unless your talents included precognition, you were going to have a hard time.
At the very least, we're not stuck in the Dark Ages anymore.

The definative pro vs con is that we have gaming and internet in our country but internet speeds are slow and services like xbox live are watered down. At least we live in a growing country and it can only get better.

And a Rage Quit once in a while due to lag is good for the heart
