Best game aesthetic

What game do you think has the best game aesthetic? Maybe that is a bit of an ambiguous question. So the alternative is which aesthetic suits the game that its in? Which aesthetic makes the game for you?

Inevitably games that try to look realistic look bad.

I've played quite a few hours of FTL, even though there are not 3d graphics the game feels right the way it is.

Another example for me is Borderlands, that pixel shader style suits the game.

And of course the dark feeling you get in Amnesia: The Dark Descent also lends itself well to that game.

What are your feelings? Shiny cars? Monotone levels?

I feel that C&C3 had a good look to it. It really felt like an invasion going on by weird Tiberium aliens. It really holds up quite well even today.

Another would be Age of Empires 3. The cartoony realism of the game also suits the atmosphere and it also holds up well today.

Come to think of it, most strategy games have an aesthetic that suits its universe and atmosphere and they tend to age quite well. I guess it has to do with the "zoomed out" nature of the player's perspective whereby insanely large textures and small details aren't that necessary.

I'm also a bit of a racing game fan. Most recent racing games have gone for the ultra realism feel and most come fairly close. Grid 2 is a standout title in this regard, with incredible lighting, physics and vehicle damage (given its arcade nature). Compare it to many modern racers and you'll be shocked to see how good it still looks. My current racing darling is DriveClub though. The details in the tracks and cars is just astounding, not to mention those rain effects!

Steamword games the games just feels so right and everything fits perfecty.
wish more people played it.

Ori and the blind forest.
Just wish the controls where more responsive.

oxenfree lovely contrast, beautuful scenes vs the horror.

Oh yes, Ori! One of the most beautiful games ever. Might as well add Dust: An Elysian Tale to the list then.

I don't know what you're on about Ori's controls though, it was perfect using a controller.

The cartoony style is great I just think of all the monkey island games I enjoyed back in the day, I am grateful they re-mastered them though.

I loved the trine games, they look freaking beautiful. Trine 2 probably has the best looking water I have ever seen in a game.

Despite not playing the game nearly as much as I should have, I found Endless Legend's art style and graphics really impressive.

Donkey kong country returns and red steel 2, two titles that really looked at the limitationns of the wii and played off it, Red steel 2 is a really low poly game but the XIII/borderlands like cell shading really works for the game and the quasi western setting it plays off in. Donkey Kong country a game that probably would have been a full on 3d title if it wasnt for the processing limitations of the wii looks pretty rich and lush very crash banticooty.

resident evil 1 on the ps1 also looked amazing on release, the pre rendered backrounds really worked along with the fixed angle cameras.

quite a few others i can think of but too lazy to type further
