Best RPG in the last 5 years

Not sure I would count this since BG is older than 5 years and this isn't a "new" game merely an update. But hey, that's just me.

I'd count it! Why? Because BG 1&2 we the most awesome RPGs ever. And you are entirely correct. But as a fanboy I can hurdle logic easily and simply disagree with you. :-)

But in the last 5 years for realz, Bethesda has definitely churned out the best RPGs. Oblivion. skyrim, new vegas. All amazing. I think the top down isometric RPG has lost some of its appeal these days and the new hyprid RPGs of the Mass effecting, skyrim type have become king.

Then create a thread for Best RPGs Ever and post it there.

I can't say Skyrim is the best RPG, sure ists great and a beautiful game to play. But it feel like your doing endless, thankless quest where it doesn't affect the general world in any way.

I would probably vote on Mass Effect series for delivering a thriving new Sci-fi rpg.

Skyrim
Fallout3
Dragon Age
Mass Effect
Witcher2 was a big surprise for me as I loved it.

Fallout New Vegas was the biggest disappointment.

Pretty ironic that you list Fallout 3 as one of the best, but say New Vegas was a disappointment. NV was largely considered to have much more and better RPG elements than Fallout 3.

My money is on the Mass Effect Trilogy. Most epic immersive RPG I played in the last decade. I haven't finished The Witcher 2 yet, unfortunately with most RPG's, you require a lot of time to thoroughly enjoy them.

I actually played Fallout 3 after New Vegas (took forever for FO3 to go on special :))... and then New Vegas again. I wouldn't say New Vegas was a disappointment, but I did enjoy Fallout 3 more. Ok, so I was a bit pissed because I missed the proper ending for Fallout 3, but other than that and the CTDs, I really liked it. It's been a while, but I actually think I liked the DLCs for FO3 more than the ones for NV.

Yeah NV does pretty much everything better than FO3, except for the bugs but those are mostly ironed out now. Obviously you can still prefer the city scape of FO3 over the desert of FNV, but I'm not sure how that can disappoint since if you weren't expecting a desert for FNV then I'm not sure why you bought the game. :)

I think out of the recent games (5 years) I would go with The Witcher 2, my only gripe about the game is that it's rather short even though it has solid replay value. Though I guess it's understandable, putting all the time and effort into a shorter game condensing the value compared to something like Skyrim.

Though overall my favourite RPS are the typical Morrowind, BG1+2 and Neverwinter Nights (not 2).

Question about The Witcher 2, does the story line continue from the 1st one? I got both on the steam sale, and I started #1. Seems alright, but didn't get very far yet. I have so many games I'm trying to work through right now, I am considering skipping the first one and going straight into number 2.

Any opinions?

You can play 2 without out having played one though some character and references might not make sense. If you have 1 play it first.

Looks like there's 20-30 hours playtime (from a quick google search) on #1. Maybe I'll try and rocket my way through as much as I can this weekend.

Thanks

Best one for me personally was Skyrim. With a close second being fallout. I think i put the most time into skyrim by a large amount compared to all the other SP games i have played in the last 5 years!

I enjoyed Metro 2033(epic graphics and choices to make with sweet battle scenes).probably the last good RPG i played.desperately looking for a decent one with great graphics..they only others i enjoyed were neverwinter nights(huge range of possibilities) and final fantasy 8(Squall was quiet.even tho he had a gunblade...A GUNBLADE!!)...any suggestions?

O.o It might just be me but I wouldn't classify Metro 2033 as RPG, the few choice you do get to make are far from RPG like, its much, much closer to a traditional linear corridor shooter (As covered HERE in the Review for Metro 2033 I wrote). At best you could argue it has the odd, well meaning, poorly executed RPG mechanic. Lack of Inventory renders the economy they tried to set up moot and with the exception of the stealth sections you are pretty much forced to play the game 1 way. STALKER is more RPG than Metro. And while it was visual ok for the time the at times completely broken mechanics could render the game unplayable. So even if by the broadest definition of RPG you managed to count it It would be nowhere near the top of my list.

Yeah, Metro 2033 has lite RPG features, at the very best. It's one of the best FPSes released in recent years, but calling it an RPG is taking it a bit too far.

I agree with not calling it an RPG but I'd still recommend the game, it was awesome!
