Best Simulation Graphics

I went to the air force wanting to be a pilot, passed the theory tests, but because I am colour blind - they would not even consider me for pilot. Was always an interest and I like flying simulators, it is just a bit time consuming and when I leave it for a while - I forgot most of the controls and also find myself starting again with the tutorials.:)

I didn't even try, my worst mistake. Our head boy was academically #1 in Pretoria that year (1996) and they didn't even take him, so I reckoned, they won't take me then either.

Apart from the movie Top Gun, the F14 has never really captured my attention. The F4 Phantom, it's predecessor was a way more cooler jet, albeit originally designed for gun only dog fights.

The F-102 and F-106 Interceptor jets of the late 60s and 70s is awesome by the fact that they carrier AAMs with nuclear warheads, to shoot down multiple Nuclear missiles at once.

The F16, a wonderful and agile aircraft also never captured my attention. The F-15 is just so ugly and beautiful, has a spectacular power to weight ratio of almost 1:1, fully loaded.

It was just funny to me seeing a F-14 Tomcat doing dogfights in Top Gun. I will accept medium range fights and bombing runs and to me that would be its purpose. It can take quite a heavy load which includes fuel and I am sure it did well for its intended purpose.

I definitely agree - F-15 rocks as well as the Mig-29 (Get confused with the SU flanker and the Mig sometimes) The F-16 is very agile and not a bad machine in my opinion (for dogfights)

Just imagine - Could have been an opportunity. Not that I really want to be in combat situation - but to fly a fighter jet like the Mirage and fire off a few rounds would have made me happy for life. :-)

The F4 was originally designed with only external hard points and did intercepts using A2A missiles like AIM-7 and AIM-9. They could load an external gun pod but rarely did. It's only after some losses in Vietnam that they started rolling out the upgraded phantom with an internal cannon and started the ACM school.

My humble apologies, correct. Was designed for missiles only, but lacked guns when it went in close against the NVC MiG 15s etc.
