Best smartphones for gaming

I still own and game on an Xperia Play. Yes I know by today standards it's an ancient phone but it works and I love it. Pity Sony abandoned the concept and didn't release new models with better hardware as it would fill a gap in the market.

I guess they still want to push the PS Vita instead of growing the mobile phone game market.
 
So other than the benchmarks, shouldn't accessories and the ability to play games "better" also count?
Even though i don't particularly use it (because i got an Xbox) , but my Xperia Z1 does have the ability to hook up a PS3 dualshock controller:

You'll probably be able to do this with any Android phone, so then the question remains, what does the iPhone offer in this department?
