Best software for compressing video and audio?

If you try WinRAR, WinZip or 7Zip, none of these programs can compress video and audio files much at all.
For instance a 20MB file only gets compressed to like 19.5MB on max compression.

What software out there is used to compress audio/video files into a compacted archive that compresses around the 50-60% mark?

Note : I am talking only about lossless compression here, I am aware video/audio can be compressed into smaller file sizes at a lower quality.

Thanks

The problem these days is that video and audio files are already so much compressed that you will struggle to get them compressed anymore.

If you create an archive in 7-Zip and set the compression method to Ultra then it's probably your best case scenario. Hopefully someone can help you out but it's unlikely that you will get around the 50-60% compression mark with lossless compression.

So how's Auckland? I'm also thinking of emigrating to New Zealand one day. It's a bit sad to lose a promising game developer to another country though. I hope you enjoy it there. :)

You could try rendering them through a program like Adobe Premier or Sony Vegas. With the right settings and codecs you cut down immensely on filesizes. My DayZ recordings average 10GB per hour and run through Vegas I get the file size down to 300MB on average rendered at 720P.

It's awesome here, different world. Auckland is a big city with a lot going on.
NZ at least has a semi-decent game industry, went for 4 interviews here for work visa, got job offers already.

My dreams and aspirations were to make Meltdown a big game company hiring lots of people, but unfortunately there's no better time than now for me to leave SA while I can and see what else the world has to offer.

You wont be able to compress video/audio with programs like winrar etc

Think of it this way, a text document has ABCABCD in it...

the compressor will then say "ok theres 2 instances of ABC so we will assign ABC x" Now instead of ABCABCD the text document is "xD" inside the zip/rar file thus making the file shorter

However with regards to video and audio its a continuous ABCDEFGH.... etc etc, nothing is the same in a video.

Your best option as stated above is to use programs like Adobe Premier or sony vegas and mess with around with the codecs...

Generally i find anything MP3 128kbit is fine (i set my video encoding to this) obviously the higher bit rate you go the bigger the video/audio.

What I usually do, depending on the video, is to lower the quality. For HD videos, if I don't really need 1080, I change it to 720 or even 540 if it is something like The Daily Show. I've been using MP3Wrap which basically converts any video to mp4 with the option to change the resolution. Sometimes, just running a video through the utility without changing the quality, makes it smaller already (even if it was a MP4 file to begin with).
