Blizzard hiring console developers for Diablo III

Captain Extremist of the first tank battalion of the PC Defence Force reporting in.

Before donning my tinfoil hat and spewing all sorts of wild accusations, let me first say that I'm all for console ports of Blizzard's games provided the release methodology of their previously ported titles is followed:

  1. Design game for PC
  2. Release game on PC
  3. Decide to cash in on the console market
  4. Dumb game down for console(s)
  5. Release on console(s)
  6. ???
  7. PROFIT!

RAGE!!!!!11!111

No just j/k. I already know the PC version is solid because of all the gameplay that's been shown off at Blizzcon and that's really all that matters, that the release for each platform plays to that platform's strengths.

What would get me raging is the game getting delayed another year+ for a simultaneous release. If they started development tomorrow on the console version, they would have a lot of work ahead of them. Changing the controls, the UI, practically rewriting the multiplayer component which is critical to the success of a Diablo game. Devs that pump out games on a very fast cycle would at least give that kind of work (particularly the multiplayer) a year.

Other than that, the more the merrier! Maybe we can all play together, not likely =( . Would be awesome though, Diablo isn't exactly a super competitive game and technically getting everyone playing together is not a challenge at all.

What was the point of using The Lost Vikings as an example... it was a platform game and thus suitably prepared for play on the consoles of the time.

/sigh

Still... The Lost Vikings was such an epic game. I could still play it despite it many years...

Yip, no real surprise. It might even be awesome on console. I think it is just a matter of time before game devs move away from PC completely.

Blizzard has stated on their forums that a console version won't delay or impact the PC/Mac version of D3. So no reason to rage yet.

That's the part right there. If that happens I will be really, really annoyed. We always wait longer for our "ports". For instance. Red Dead Redemption came out loong ago for console, but I have never had the chance to play it. I'm not even sure if it will be released for PC, but that's just an example.

We have been waiting for ages now on Diablo 3. I hope they release the game for PC as scheduled and not wait for both platforms to be done. Sigh..

It was a Blizzard game on console. There are still people out there who insist Blizzard is a PC DEVOLLOPPAR!!!11111oneone.

Rather than Diablo 3, I would honestly ... you know ... just like some StarCraft Ghost please.

I really couldn't care about Diablo. The design is archaic imho and I don't see the appeal.

I would really love to see Blizzard have the guts to actually do something that's not in the realm of their own personal "safecashzone" (i.e. Warcraft/Starcraft/Diablo).

Haha, all things go console eventually.

Next up, Starcraft II going console. Mark my words. It's too much of a money spinner for them not to.

You know, if they just allow for KB/Mouse control on the console then it wouldn't be an issue(on PS3 this shouldn't be an issue, since UT3 already has mouse/kb support. So I can't see this being a problem from an implementation perspective).

I've found that unless an RTS is built with the limitations of the controller in mind, then it ends up playing like crap. That's the reason why Halo Wars is the only console RTS I've ever completed.

Because if Sony or Microsoft had to give them K+M compatibility, consoles would be little more than dumbed down PCs. And nobody wants to admit that!

+1 people don't believe me, but money talks... and actibliz are fucking greedy

I don't think that an input device defines the functionality of a platform. A console is a "specialist" device with the primary purpose of allowing the user to play games.

I think the fact that KB+Mouse control works so damned well is more of a fluke than anything else. The KB/Mouse was never designed as an input device for playing games, it sortof just evolved into that.

That might be true, but if you think about it- it is a much more versatile input scheme. I'll always hate playing an FPS game on a console. I just can't get into that. RTS games? Won't even try!

Back on topic though, it almost does seem like consoles are starting to take over the world and that's kinda sad :( I love playing games on PC. I just hope a few more dedicated PC Platform developers comes out of the woodwork, otherwise no more PC dedicated games like Diablo or BF3 :(

There are reports that Blizzard is making another MMO that isn't based on their existing IP's

“Diablo would be the easiest to bring over [to console] - mainly because of the controls”. I mean, it’s mostly just killing stuff and looting stuff. That’s, like, two buttons.

two buttons? sounds like its already dumbed down. consoles not to blame for this
