Blizzard: Valve trademarking "Dota" was "not the right thing to do"

SC2 modding is alive Omega.
Just check blizzcon they have a few official mods coming out and one was the dota there a few others can't remember there names now but yeah its starting to trickle.
Its going to take a while for anything to good to come out from it since its pretty new.

Oh ok then, forgive my ignorance in this matter.

I personally can't really give a rodents bumhole that Blizzard is grumpy about this. I'm actually glad Valve took this one because I'm not so amped about waiting 10 years for DOTA 2. Don't know about you guys?

Yes, do do all of us- but at least Valve can work on more than one project at a time and they don't take years and years to finish them either. Ok, that's not the case with Episode 3, but I trust that it's going to be really, really awesome. Something amazing is brewing there, I reckon and that's why they are taking so long. Please don't let me be wrong Valve...

To us, that means that you're really taking it away from the Blizzard and Warcraft III community and that just doesn't seem the right thing to do

I lol'd hard. What he is actually saying is that Bobby kotdick isn't going to let this slide in the next couple of board meetings.

Bitch all you like

Blizzard may take an age to release a game but somehow, whenever it is released, one always feels it's worth the wait. I didn't quite think it was possible, but with SCII, I was so over it until it was released. I haven't been blown away by a game like that ever.

He does sorta have a point. Maybe blizzard should go trademark "Counter-strike 3" (Not that thats possible anymore). Effectively its the same: A popular community mod getting trademarked by a competitor.

The reason why DOTA2 is being created is because of limitations of the War3 engine and because it requires a specialized set of features. Something Blizzard won't and can't supply.

Can't see why it should remain "locked up" on Blizzard's engine.

This has an ugly stench to it that will probably haunt Valve DotA forever. Stealing a free mod that's played by a huge community, slapping a number 2 on it, then making people pay for it... what an asshole move. It's like declaring war. And when it comes to quality of games released, Valve < Blizzard, so this is not going to be as good as it could have been for DotA fans. Glad I'm not one of them.

Excuse my ignorance - but have Valve officialy stated that this will be a paid-for application? And to be fair - if they make it properly and give it the attention that it deserves which community members have been begging for then they can charge for it! Duh! They're doing the "community" a huge favor by giving DotA the attention it deserves and you lot want to complain about shelling out, probably R150 for the game?

Go blow bubbles - you're all spoilt brats. I hope it's too expensive for you so that those of us who know what it's worth can enjoy it with others who also appreciate it for what it is.

I actually agree with you. If Blizzard wanted they could stop Valve, but they have no reason to. I don't see them saying anything against Valve making DOTA2, but they're against Valve trademarking their mod.

Particularly since this isn't a single team mod - it really is a community effort. While all kudos go to Icefrog for developing it all those years, it was the community who tested bugs and balance and gave ideas on how the map was to be bettered. As you so rightly said... no one is against them making a game - they are against them trademarking the name DOTA which is one of the most community driven maps in the world.
