Boom Blox-a personal review

Boom Blox is another charming, easily accessible, yet sometimes surprisingly challenging Nintendo Wii title for the young at heart or even the more seasoned gamer who is not above unwinding with a quick level or two [though I found that I seldom stopped at this] of block-busting. As such, it is in keeping with what I percieve to be the Nintendo ethos for at least its current generation of gaming devices: [this is my first Nintendo console] providing electronic entertainment without sometimes gratuitous distractions such as physically realistic turbulent fluid motion, pretty particle effects or minutely detailed textures. [Though this same economy does leave bad Wii titles without even state-of-the art eye-candy to commend them] That Boom Blox is almost entirely devoid of anything one might take seriously as a storyline does not detract from this particular game. Granted, there is a simple story presented in rhyme in Boom Blox' Adventure Mode but this does little more than to provide the scaffolding around which the themes for the playing areas are built.

Gameplay revolves around using the Wiimote and a steady hand to remove
"blox" and sometimes opposing characters from structures by blasting, sliding, grabbing and pulling "blox" with a range of different properties such as the indestructible Immobile Blox, Bomb Blox, slippery Ice Blox and volatile Chemical Blox which serve to ease or hinder
one's passage through a given level, depending on the conditions set for the completion of that level. For example, one scenario might entail placing a Bomb Block in such a position that detonating it [usually by throwing a ball at it] will liberate the blocks of gold one's character is mining. In another, Chemical Blocks might have to be moved to clear the way across a flimsy block-built bridge without allowing them to touch [ a sure-fire way of
randomly distributing blocks around the playing area] or toppling the bridge. As one progresses throught the game, characters and background
objects which can be used in the game's Create Mode are unlocked.
In addition to Adventure Mode, there is also Explore Mode where once can exercise one's block redistribution skills in a variety of different level types.
Once one has worked one's way through the Medieval Castle, Jungle, Old American West and Halloween-themed areas of Adventure Mode, a number of bonus levels are unlocked.
Finally, Create Mode allows one to modify existing levels which have been completed or to wiggle and wave new levels into existence and share these over the WiiConnect24 Service. This is likely to keep the more creative among us busy long after they have finished the rest of the game. [Which shouldn't take too long.]

Though I do not have clones with which to try out this part of the game for myself, there is a Multiplayer Mode in which 2 to 4 can compete against each other to clear levels or collaborate in solving puzzles.
