Boy stabs mom for not paying internet bills

Thats pretty messed up.

Personally, I dont think that the claims made against gaming are complete hogwash.

I do think that games can have an adverse effect on gamers, but not to the point where you stab ur mother and or gun down your fellow pupils and students like with the Columbine incident.

In fact, where Columbine is concerned, it was the music that those guys listened to that got them doing that, not games. Music is very powerful, I guess they got swept away with what they were into, and that content contained killing/murder. I dont recall the song, but the content of the lyrics of a particular song was exactly what they carried out that day, there is evidence of those guys actually speaking the lyrics while they were doing the killing.

Basically, regardless of whether its music or games that are to blame, its what entered and what was entertained in their imagination that led to their actions.

Murders, adultery, theft etc come from the heart. The greek translation for heart is Dianoia - meaning imagination.

I have to disagree with you completely. No game ever is going to "make" you do anything and neither is music. Everybody always points at the music and games those to kids from the Columbine massacre. Nobody went and looked their state of minds or how deeply depressed and High they where. Its much easier to blame gaming or music than to say there is a serious problem with society. Because the moment you admit the problem does lie with gaming or music or movies you realize that not only is anybody capable of this but everyone is. As ive said in every video game violence article that made its way through here; Most children (& Adults) who become "addicted" (and i use the term very loosely) to video games are escaping from something. In schools its mostly your geeks and nerds who are social outcasts due to the idiotic hierarchy in schools, especially US schools. These children suffer years of abuse at the hands (but mostly mouths) of the "cool" kids. Depressing, Bipolar disorder all ailments that spring from this peer abuse, so the child looses himself in video games because there he has power, there he is the alpha male, there he gets the gurl. Is extreme cases violence manifests itself physically not due to over exposure of violence in gaming but simple because the child was pushed to far. God know there where many times back in high school that i contemplated going ape ship and killing a few people, never did. So i wish people would stop blaming everything except the actual problem. Address the issues in society and then you will solve these violent occurrences in schools and colleges.,

eh, this kind of thing is just out there. I mean really, do some of us have such a tenuous grip on reality that this would appear normal?

I hate these stories cause it always makes gaming look real bad and is fodder for all these anti-gaming lobbyists. I also feel that gaming has some effect on you but the extent it affects you depends on your mental state. I remember when I was younger and used to watch those kung fu movies, afterwards my buddies and I would go outside and play karate. The same type of thing that happens today with kids when they watch WWE. I think gaming has a similar effect on you and it might affect some people more due to the interactive element, but like I said it all depends on how stable you are upstairs.

I've been playing violent games basically all my life (been gaming with my dad since the ZX Spectrum) and I was never told what movies I could or couldn't see, what games I could or could not play etc. My parent's were not very strict.

I don't recall me running around stabbing other people, or feeling driven or brainwashed by games to do so......

It's not the media (games, music, movies etc) It's the person that's to blame.

Despite the Wall 'O Text Crit to my eyeballs for 999999999dmg, I pretty much totally agree with this.

This wheel or an argument will go round and round and round. Oh well, I guess the more things change the more they stay the same.

I can't quite agree with you. Music, games and movies to not influence my behaviour, or any of my life decisions. Neither do I believe that either of these ALONE have any power over a person.

I am not saying that they don't have anything to do with it, perhaps they do, but certainly not single handedly.

The real culprit in my eyes is drugs and alcohol. And when I say drugs, I am not limiting the title to street drugs, I am talking about everything from street drugs to psychiatric and other pharmaceutical drugs.

I don't believe there is anything else on this planet that can honestly make someone insane enough to do things like stab their own mother because of an internet connection.
