Broadcasting gaming on Twitch.tv

hello

anyone doing this? I know there are a lot of people who enjoy watching this kind of thing, but I dont see much/if any streams coming from South Africa.

I have setup a Twitch account, and installed various bits of software to get this all up and running.

The main challenge remains the uplink speed in this country, unless you sittin pretty with a VDSL connection... which I dont have.

Im limited to about 120 K/sec upload, for both video and audio. AAC Im going with 96 kbps and video Im still fiddling with various res and bitrate settings.

Probably wont end up being the BEST quality stream, but Im gonna give this a whirl, for fun.

Anyone else doing this?

edit : will post my channel when Im up and running for feedback on quality etc etc

It would have been awesome to see more South African streams. It sucks that our upload speeds don't even come close to cutting it.

Ive done some limited testing, on conjunction with support from the official OBS forums and I please to report that the stream is more than acceptable.

Now Im looking for some Heroes of Newerth buddies. Is theire a HoN league or something out there? Im so tired of playing with baddies... and my mates arent really into the game

Use OBS, its the best free software around and is used by many pros...

Just make sure to change it to a lower bitrate before you start... (you can also record videos with OBS)

There are quite a few BF3 players that stream on odd occasion. Check out the dogamingforums.

I stream on occasion too - twitch.tv/ph4tso . Going to be streaming a lot of BF4 and spectate/cast some tournaments too hopefully.

I use OBS with rate set to 480-500KBps, slow-medium encoding, 480p ... I really wish VDSL wasn't so damn expensive because 720p is the way to go with streaming.

I've tried streaming WoW with a 10/1 line using OBS but the stream comes out way too blurry at 480p and lags for my viewers.

What settings do you use exactly? I tried the OBS Estimator and it didn't help with the blurriness.

Im trying to get my head around the below. From what I can determine it makes no sense to have this on "veryfast" if you have a decent CPU

x264 CPU Preset
This is an internal quality / time tradeoff scale in x264. A faster preset means less time will be spent encoding, but the image quality will be worse. A slower preset will increase CPU usage, but the image quality will be slightly better. You will almost always get better quality improvements from either a higher FPS, higher resolution or an increased bitrate. Changing this setting to improve quality is not recommended as the improvements are very minor and come at a great CPU cost. Going faster than veryfast will also disable many x264 optimizations and your stream quality will suffer. If you have constant CPU usage (eg a capture card) and know for certain you have spare CPU resources, you can set a slower preset for a very minor quality improvement. If you notice you have low FPS or lagged frames, you may have set your preset too slow.

Saying you streaming at 480p is a very small piece of the puzzle. There are a lot of other settings to take into consideration as well (see post above)

Im going to be fiddling tonight when I get home, will post some more details later on exactly what I have

I used to stream aion on twitch.

As long as you got a stable 4mb with a 512kbps upload (STABLE) you can stream at 480p (as long as NOTHING else is using the net), you most probably need vdsl for 720p

What you need to remember is that you are only uploading to twitch, the users on the stream are actually downloading the data from twitch and NOT from you

what bitrate were you streaming at for your 480p stream? what setup did you use? OBS?

I have a 1024 kbps upload, so I should be ok. Will stack the quality and load my CPU for the x264 CPU preset ;)

Would a standard 4mip line handle low rez streaming.

Liek ideally 480 but even 240?
I've heard horror stories of needing at least 2mips upstream for a decent stream quality.
If I can use my line I will surely start streaming on twitch.

I'm using OBS with the recommended Estimator settings:

CPU Advice
Set FPS to 30

Game Advice
Try to aim for the highest bitrate possible for high motion games
Use game capture if possible for maximum performance.
Use window capture with Aero enabled if game capture is unavailable.

Network Advice
Due to your low upload speed, aim for a low resolution such as 480p
Considering lowering your buffer size and/or bitrate if you experience in-game latency
Use CBR for improved stream stability
Recommended max bitrate: 765
Recommended buffer size: 459

I end work in an hour so I'll provide the rest of the settings after that.

Video lags and is blurry but the audio is fine.

Very interested to see your outcomes. At the moment my OBS settings are:

Encoding Tab
Use CBR - checked
Enable CBR padding - unchecked
Max Bitrate - 480|Buffer Size - 480
Use Custom Buffer Size - checked
Codec - AAC|Bitrate - 48
Video Tab
Resolution downscale to 2.25(852x480)
FPS 29
Disable Aero
AdvancedTab
Use Multithreaded Op - checked
Process Prio Class - normal
Scene Buffering time - 400
x264 CPU Preset - Medium
Keyframe - 2

GTX770, i5 @ 4.5GHz, 8GB, SSD, Win7

From what I can gather / based on friends feedback, the stream is pretty good. Text is a little blurry, but overall not bad for 480p. Just wish I could stream at 720p.

and what about your quality balance under the Encoding Tab?

streaming NOW using those settings of yours, with my quality setting on 6

Quality balance defaults to 10 when you use CBR, but I think its variable ie changes on the fly.
