Budget "Gaming" Monitor advice

I am in the market for a new monitor for my gaming PC, but a 144Hz screen is outside of my budget.

I am looking at a 24" or 27" HD screen. Then there is the curved or flat options. Does the curve make it better or is it just a gimmick?

This will connect up to a GTX 970 so would like the best image quality I can get for no more than R5000.

I wouldn't worry or fuss too much about 144Hz, that being said, do try and afford at least a 120Hz. Makes the world of difference. Personally I think the curved screens are gimmicky and will only be in the Ultra-Wide aspect ratios, then there's the thing of games that support those resolutions.

Are you wanting to game at 1080p or 1440p?

Will a 970 even be able to run current/upcoming games at 1440p with highest settings?

For now I'll be happy with just 1080p, its already up from my current 1050p that starting to fail on me.

I've found the Acer GN246HLB, 24'' 144Hz for just over 5 grand, so I'm considering it.

A 144 hz is only worth it if you play FPS games competitively or enjoy the extra smoothness in my opinion.
If you just play normal games and want to get nice vibrant colors then a 1080p /1440p should be perfect.

144hz screen colour vibrancy are also compromised and not as sharp as normal lower hz screens. That is also something to consider

I don't think so, you'll get close to maxing everything but with a drop in FPS. At 1080p I'm running just about everything on max with steady FPS. That's on a 120Hz monitor.

I dunno, to me that's a steep price to pay considering the difference between 144Hz and a 120Hz screen. That's a big price difference to pay for barely noticable difference (in my opinion).

Rather stick to a 60hz 1080p, unless you can push 120fps in every game you play.

Agreed 100% . And if you want to play a game at full graphics because you enjoy the beauty of it. And not putting everything on low just to get more fps. Then a 60hz 1080p should be fine. Especially with a 970. Running all the newest games on Full will push it

I would say even 120hz would not be necessary> What kind of games do you play mostly?

Bit of everything really but mostly FPS and RPG types (e.g. CS:GO, BF4, Diablo 3, Witcher 3)

That's another thing. Not sure on the 120FPS in everything, which will make 120Hz kind of pointless.

This brings me back to a 24" 1080p 60Hz with a low response time.

For fps games 144hz is amazing. So I think you need to decide, do you want performance or prettiness =D

What monitor are you using?

So as a normal gamer I should rather look for a 24" 1080p 120Hz.

I am using the following:

With all being said I don't think I can go back from 120Hz, I can notice it most in my racing games like Dirt Rally. Though I've also got a 970 I have it maxed out at 120Hz.

Wootware has an Acer 144hz for around R5200. Never used Acer before so i'm not too sure about the quality.
